What did I break? 6 speed manual = gearbox full of neutral

Since everybody loves a story with an ending *happy or otherwise.
This is exactly what happened. Center section of the clutch disc separated from the friction material.
Poor clutch had plenty of life left on it, just that the clutchy bit was no longer attached to the middle bit.
Also: Throwout bearing was grindy (had been for some time) had a couple of gnarly looking hotspots on the flywheel and pressure plate and I had a minor seep in the rear main seal.

All fixed, truck is back to happy shitbox status and tucked in with all her shitbox friends.
    The end.

Also: If anyone in the northern part of San Diego needs any service/maintenance type stuff done, I highly recommend TNT Services in Oceanside. In and out in one day, great service and good prices. They don't deal with aftermarket/performance stuff but if you have stock bits on your truck that need fixed, they are fantastic. Most of the people that work there drive Tacomas/Tundras, there were a few in for service too so they know our trucks well.

    It is.
87 GT Pro Freestyle Tour. Have had it since new (minus the 20 years it was up in the rafters in my parent's garage).

    Thank you.
It photographs better then it looks in person. Paint is starting to show its age. :(
Might, just might be for sale soon. Not sure yet.

That is gorgeous, Rich. Love my old bikes. You'd freak if you saw what that bike goes for now.

I follow the market on them. It is mindblowing what they go for. Then again they weren’t cheap new. Will probably never be for sale, too many memories.

Can’t say that I have never done that before. Crappy part is it broke when I wasn’t screwing around, just going to pick up dinner.

I wouldn't either if only for that reason you mentioned. I still kick myself for selling a couple of my old bikes..and I'd kill to get my old Schwinn back that got stolen.

Is the other one a 'Goose?

    I thought Xrunners were 6speed
supposedly new clutch thickness = 8mm, mine was at 7mm when removed (6spd 4x4)
but I'd bet money previous owner had a new one installed to cause that at some point in it's life, maybe even under warranty

85 Mongoose Californian. All OG save for the tires, grips and pads (repros). I would be surprised if that bike doesn't have 10,000 miles on it. I rode it EVERYWHERE.
    Got it Christmas day 1985.
Was stolen in 1987. Bought the GT to replace it and then saw it sitting in front of a store a few weeks after I bought the GT (delivered a lot of newspapers for that bike).
Friends and I may or may not have thumped the bike thief around before taking it back. ;)
I take it down and ride it around the neighborhood on occasion.

They are. All X-Runners came with the V6 and the 6-speed manual in the Access Cab configuration. In 2008, the only options were paint color. You could choose between Black Sand Pearl, Speedway Blue Metallic, and (I think) Radiant Red.

They changed all three colors throughout the years. BSP was replaced with a different black, SBM was replaced with a darker shade of blue, and the red was changed to a deeper, less orange red.

I take it this was the OEM clutch? Known failure on those. From the '09+ models. Maybe until around '12.

Seems as if it was, and it was the 2nd OEM to fail.

You wouldn’t happen to know anyone with the ability to “test” 13’+ clutch would you?
:boink:I mean, it surely will hold up to all you have to throw at it?

Was OEM clutch #2 (and trans #2). Per Toyota’s service history both were done within about 10 miles prior to me buying it. I think the truck was traded in while it was at the dealership for the warranty work.

What I don’t know is if they replaced the clutch with the replacement/revised disc or just chucked another one of the known bad ones in it. Wouldn’t matter anyway, that was 7 years and 70,000+ miles ago.

Just giving you a hard time.
I’m going to guess your truck would blow the “new” OEM clutch apart too?
