So what is it that the 16-17s OR have with their brakes that the other tacos don't?

Electronic vacuum pump if my memory serves me. Most brake boosters run vacuum from the intake side of the engine , the electronic vacuum pump is there apparently to provide higher levels of vacuum when truck is @ idle (for example coming down a steep incline). Engines with big cams also generate crap vacuum at idle, some people add electronic vacuum pumps for that reason as well. Good idea on toyota's part if you ask me.

Not sure if all 2018's have it though. It's possible.

Isn't the air dam fake? No really taking in Air, so can't effect the mileage.

It apparently adds ~1mpg but there is no empirical evidence I've seen to prove that.

Not being ugly af is worth 1mpg to me regardless

The Off Road and Pro have the Big Electro/Hydraulic Unit to run A-Trac and or Crawl Control and the others use a Traditional Style Vacuum Booster

    @MystiqueTaco we've got both the '17 TACO OR and '17 T4R SR5 Premium;
Taco i currently average 18-20mpg mixed driving everyday and lot of short trips.
4Runner gets a solid 17mpg any given day.
Taco is underpowered but once you get used to it and the shifty tranny is not bad at all (ECT Power is the sh*t btw)
4Runner is a lot better to drive, feels more responsive, comfortable and better towing
Taco interior is nice with good materials and electronics/infotainment are up to date
4runner interior is a lot more comfortable solid materials and also can fit ALOT of stuff inside if you fold the seats down, electronics however is def not up to date and the infotainment is subpar

My take if toyota had went with an updated more efficient/powerful version of the engine/transmission combo from the 4runner/2nd Gen onto the Taco it would be an amazing truck all the way around.
If you had the up to date features of the Taco on the 4Runner it would also an amazing truck
They are both great so you can't go wrong either way depends on what you're willing to compromise on, just go test drive a 4Runner

Literally everything. The only thing I miss from the Tacoma is the individual tire readout.......

I had a Friday night special truck, lots of issues, so I traded it off. I still love these trucks, and am glad to see some stuff slowly being resolved.

I love my manual transfer case lever in the Jeep.

Having said that, my 05 Tacoma’s actuator for the t-case never skipped a beat in over 100k Miles of abuse. Never did any maintenance on that truck either. Oops! The 2nd gen and 3rd gens actuator can’t be that different.

You must have just got an unlucky one!

I hope this is a unique thing. One of the other threads pinned in this thread mentioned a sliding sleeve in the A.D.D. wasn't disengaging causing a tremendous drop in gas mileage. Maybe my Taco is experiencing that as well? Regardless, I am hopeful this doesn't parlay into a long list of issues either caused by the 4HI being stuck and needing new actuators already or that just being one of the many symptoms to rear its ugly head. In The Lemon Law Clock has started but in AZ new cars have to be out of service 30 days before you can capitalize.

There maybe some differences in the OR that can affect mpg vs other models. Differences such different tires, tire size, tire pressure, air deflector, rear diff. But the biggest difference is the tires and whether or not you have been driving in 4hi on the road.
You would know the latter pretty much by how it drags or skips/jumps when making a tight turn on pavement. Also your front tires will look cupped, a sure sign. I doubt that is your case, you would notice it.

There have been some issues with the actuators being stuck, some by operator error and I'm sure the law of averages will bring a defective one now and again.
After over 32k on mine, it shifts in & out like butter and I've not serviced the front yet, but I soon will.

Let us know how it all works out for you, inquiring minds want to know

    Cheers!

Have you offroaded your 4runner yet??

Thats the biggest disappointment for me, the 4runner doesn't flex nearly as well as the Tacoma which can be downright dangerous. I've been back and fourth between 4runners and Tacomas but always way more confident offroading difficult trails in a Taco. The 4Runners tend to flip instead of flex :(

I learned that the hard way...
