I finally had a key cut by a not so local locksmith. I provided the correct blanks (G chip) and he cut and programmed it. One of my blanks wouldn't program and he did cut another non chip key and gave it to me. One door key, one programmed key cost $55.....

I bought a key from the dealer unchipped for like $9. I brought it to the hardware store and they cut me two new oem keys, bought on ebay for under $30. for the price of buying another unchipped key. Just waiting on the programmer...

I need to get a key made but have somewhat of a "strange situation." I have only 1 key for the truck and it only works in the ignition but does not unlock the doors. Id like to get one that would unlock the doors but not like I have a key for them to just duplicate. What would i have to do to get one that would work in the doors and ignition? Order through dealership?

It might be worth your while talking to a locksmith. I'm not familiar with Toyota lock cylinders but when I had an issue with my Jeep, I was able to repin a new ignition cylinder to match the old lock cylinder. Might be worth a shot...

You have 1 of 2 possibile situations. Either someone replaced the ignition lock cylinder and didn't bother rekeying it to match the doors or both door locks are gummed up/ worn / broken.

If your key is in good shape and works good in the ignition, take out both door locks, and take them and the key to a locksmith. The door locks are EASY to remove. Pop the black plastic plug out of the edge of the door and loosen the torx bolt. There is a plastic clip that keeps the bolt from falling out. Then just pull the lock out.

As i just read the whole thread again, I'm wondering if @fixnfly 's key with the battery was cloned from the key he brought in or if the key was added to the trucks computer. This could be a work around to the three key limit, would it not?

    Just thinking out loud...

I would say it was cloned from the original key since the guy who who programmed it was never near my truck.
He just took my key and disappeared for awhile then came back with a new battery powered key. At least it's not solar powered.

Is it verified that there is a 3 key limit?

Very interested because I heard it was two. Possibly different key types have different numbers? My 2015 has a "G" key.

Other than having the gray fob, I'm not sure. I don't think you can use it to program other keys.

Valet keys usually can unlock the driver's side door and start the car, but can't unlock the trunk or the glove box. This key is normally used when someone else operates your vehicle, such as a valet parking attendant.

I don't think valet keys are even relevant these days. Who would let someone park their truck for them?

Valet keys are good for the hide-a-key box under the bed.

Sometimes you don't have much of a choice. In Los Angeles there are parking lots that are valet only. Your choice is to use them, Uber, taxi, bus :)rofl::annoyed:), or hope you can find street parking within 1/2 a mile of your destination. I don't like valet parking and can sometimes avoid it, other times it's not worth the hassle to me.

My 2010 doesn’t have a locking glove compartment or anything so I’m not sure how the valet key differs from the master key. They both open the doors and start the truck. I guess the valet key is the one you give to your girl, lol
