Really? For what trim if you don’t mind me asking? That must be a recent market markup, I just picked up a 21’ OR from Koch 33 for $500 over MSRP at the end of September..

That’s ridiculous, I cringed paying $500 over. Can’t imagine paying $3k over, unless you just absolutely need a vehicle right now.

Koch was great the first time around. Now they're like 'it's 3k over msrp, maybe more come november' and have a take it or leave it attitude.

Not even trying. Must be a lot of stupid buyers around here.

Agreed, my experience a month ago was great. My salesperson seemed motivated and was very pleasant. Crazy what a month or two/market change can do..

It’s funny (stupid) why people won’t go out of state to purchase. We are in the Phoenix AZ area and got a flight to Seattle WA to pick up a Taco. The dealers in the Phoenix area get anywhere from $500 to $600 for DOC fees and it’s nothing but doing the paper work. The dealer in the Seattle area only charged $75 for DOC fee. Plus we got a 30 day drive out plate for cheap. We made a vacation out of the trip back. Stopped to see family in OR and spent time in the Red Woods. Plus when I registered the truck in AZ we only paid State tax no city or county tax. Just the saving on the DOC & tax’s paid for the week long trip. Plus I found a manual trans! I tried to order a manual local and dealerships refused to order. They all said if you back out we have a truck we can’t sell because no one wants a manual transmission nowadays.

Not everyone has the time to look for and retrieve a car outside a certain area. When all is said and done it's just cheaper to pay a markup considering travel expenses and time spent.

Yes, this is the crux of it: time vs $$$.

I paid $3k markup. I didn't like it, but it was a rational decision:
    - The build was an exact fit with what I wanted.
    - To purchase what I wanted within 2021, this was easily the best price in my local market.
    - I have commensurate "value adjustment" for my used car sale, which may change if I wait
    - Shipping from out of state adds $1k to 1.5k to MSRP or slightly below
    - Flying plus driving adds $0.5k to $1.5k in tickets, gas, food, lodging.
    - Out of state purchase will be an 'order', which means getting on a long list of interested buyers with estimated 3 to 6 month wait for approximately what you want.
    - If there is a problem when you get there or the truck arrives shipped, you have no leverage to walk away.
    - Warranty issues, should they arise, could get complicated, if not a corporate recall issue

For me personally, having a good used car to sell in a hot market made enough sense to offset the truck price in a hot market within a known time window. YMMV.

I agree. A $3k markup is somewhat reasonable and worth paying. However I was quoted from $10k to $14k markup on more than one occasion so at those prices other may be inclined to go out of state to buy.

Yeah, any markup or addendum that rounds up to 5 figures is no brainer: walk away.

It was the siren call of Lunar Rock that broke me ;) Which as you know, cannot be resisted. Until I saw LR was available in ORs without the Premium Package, I was set on waiting to poach an Army Green or MGM when any near-MSRP opportunity rolled around on a 21 or 22.

I did keep shopping a bit while waiting on my allocation, in case something better showed up and/or my dealer failed to follow through. One dealer in Arizona flat out said they won't sell out of state. Mountain States in Denver was estimating 3-6 months wait for an order (really, allocation request), with some not small number of folks ahead of me on their list. As I've mentioned in other posts, all other offers within a radius where I could walk away from a sour in-store negotiation have been in the $4.2k to $10k market adjustment range.

I drove a 1993 Corolla from 2002 until 2014, and had a practical, very basic Subaru Outback since then. I was of the mind not to compromise on getting exactly what I want, if only getting moderately gouged. So here I am with a new LR OR DC SB AT.

In my case being 160 miles from a dealer out of state was well worth it. Local dealers around me were like pulling teeth when trying to order a truck no one had. I had to go out of state to find a large regional dealer that made it all possible. I got the exact truck i wanted with some extra options i didn't request, but all in all at a fair cost.

I am helping a friend purchase a Tacoma in the Seattle area and it seems every dealer has a 3k or 5k mark up. Mind sharing which dealer you worked with and referral for salesperson?

Yeah, this is insane w/ markups... was this like it before covid? I don't know as I just got into it when trying to buy a used TPro at the start of the year... I'm seeing 10% market adjustments for TRD Pro's. Luckily my dealer that I already have a purchase relationship with simply told me stop wasting time looking for used. In Feb. he said he has only 1 TRD Pro coming in May... and it didn't have a deposit on it yet. I'll give it to you at MSRP. I saw the LR before in advertisements and that's what they was getting... Done... here's may card... Arrived in June. I harassed them weekly starting in may and stopped by to have them pull up the order/inventory/status page and watching it from manufacturing to loading to shipping, whatever... it went on forever... I was a leading a 30+ person conf. call when my cell phone rang and I saw it was "Debra" my sales lady and I lost it.... Sorry folks, gotta go... vinny will take over from here... LOL. Thank you MoTown Toyota! Debra and Papi are the best!!

Definitely not like this pre-COVID. I paid 34.5k for my 2019 DCLB TRD OR.
