I bought the Nitro Gear myself: $1,250 (May 4th sale)

Labor cost me: $1,000 flat rate which was the going rate in my area. If I went 3 hrs further, it would be $750 (From 2 shops I got quote).

Just Differentials in Washington quoted me $3,530 out the door included new ECGS needle bearing and replacement E-locker clip (its cheap plastic and he says 9/10 times they break during the install process)
Rougue Off-Road in Las Vegas quoted me $2,680 out the door.\
4Wheel drive Parts quoted me $3,870 out the door
Hazzard Fabworks in Spokane,WA quoted me $2,000 out the door. $2,150 if I want the ECGS need bearing upgrade. ( these guys are the winners )

Just goes to show how much of a range there is when it comes to this type of work. I would encourage all of you to shop around like I have. At $3,500 I would had passed, but $2,000 is right on the money so I booked an appointment 4 weeks out.

Didn't happen to me BUT my neighbor at one time bought a new Chevy 4X4 truck and was having all sorts of driveability trouble in 4 wheel drive. Come to find out the factory put different ratio differentials in front and back.

Damn... turns out the guy misquoted me by a long shot, that $2,000 estimate just turned into $3,520 once he actually sent me a quote. Rouge Offroad in Vegas is the cheapest by a long shot right now. Looks like I might drive from Idaho to Vegas to save the money.

This was back in the 80's. The fellow lived next door to my wife and I.
The dealership owner found a new truck on the lot and switched differentials with them.
He still lives close by and if I run into him I will ask about the ratios.
The dealership owner who was younger than me passed away last year. I went to school with all these guys.

I don't even know what diffs ratios they had in the 80's. My '85 POS GMC had a 305 cu.in. engine, the overdrive auto and a 3.08 rear end. Almost worthless off in the field.

That would suck. I’d be pretty mad about that.

Me too! At least the Chevy dealer did something about it. My '85 GMC had rear axle tubes that were not straight (a lot of toe-in and negative camber). Probably cinched down way to tight in transit. And the GMC dealer wouldn't do a thing for me.

Happened to me on my '93 many many years ago. Took it to the dealer for a rear end repair -- gear shot. Drove fine until I put it in 4wd and the whole truck ground to a stop. The dealer said that 4wd will bind things up a bit... So, I took him for a ride. Yep, wrong ratio in the back.

Where did you end up going? I live in WA state also and gears are very costly around this neck of the woods.

A little off topic but if people are paying around $2,500 for a regear. Would it be better to just add a supercharger for double that? Or do you think the regear is the better bang for your buck?

From what I have read on these forums and the youtube's a re-gear is the best mod for our trucks besides a re-gear + Tune

I went to Hazzard Fab works and ended up paying about $3,200 I believe. I have been extremely happy with the results. I also did the ECGS bearing swap.

The supercharger is much more invasive. Reagearing the truck changes the performance, but doesn’t change the wiring, or the engine bay, or the tune, or the cooling system, or the engine operating parameters. I’m sure the supercharger is awesome, but it’s a much more invasive mode, with a much higher chance of something going wrong. Looking at it, you cannot tell a Tacoma has been regeared. That appeals to some people.

The downside of superchargers... At least in my experience, is the need to run 91 octane (or higher) in order to not have engine ping. That is the reason many "overlanders" and people who travel with their vehicles internationally don't often have them. Premium fuel is hard to find and having a vehicle that needs 91 or better to operate efficiently is not ideal when you are balls deep in a 3rd world country. Having power from the SC is great but if you can't run it optimally its more headache than it's worth. Plus.. if you were down in say panama or something and needed a supercharger belt, or a nose cone repaired... you might be waiting a while for parts or someone who knows what they are doing.
