Why would you think my comment was trolling, Larry? A bull is the third largest selection in the poll. Were all those trolling as well? Anyway, I don't troll. :)

Read the comment I quoted. Even Toyota said the logo was first introduced in the USA. Hence, the logo was likely designed for the American market. Since I've worked for several Japanese companies (Hitachi, Aiwa, Samsung, Pentax, etc), I also know they were widely obsessed at the time with American cowboys, cattle drives, bull riding, and similar (the television series Dallas was very popular there). That's also likely why a Toyota factory, first for the Tundra and later the Tacoma (both, in their minds, cowboy pickup trucks), was located in Texas.

Putting it all together, I'm convinced the logo was initially meant to resemble the head of a bull. In fact, remove the outside oval and what remains even more closely resembles a bull - the small vertical oval representing the head, with horns extending out the sides. The bull's head was then encircled like the logos of many other Asian vehicle manufacturers (Honda, Mazda, Nissan, Subaru, Kia, etc).

Since the logo has now been adopted company-wide, for vehicles sold world-wide, Toyota is now moving away from the bull connotation. However, that doesn't change what the logo was meant to resemble decades ago.

I was working with Toyota when that logo was announced. It was created at the same time as the Lexus logo, to which it's supposed to bear a family resemblance. They kind of got logo fever after Acura was launched, thinking that a symbol was classier than just type.

We referred to it internally as "the jockstrap."

Well, if the meaning of the symbol is so obtuse that all we can do is guess, then it really doesn't matter what was intended. It's basically an inkblot. If the designer intended to convey anything else then they failed. To me there is nothing about it that says "Toyota" unless somebody told me so. It could just at easily be Toro lawnmowers,.......or a vulva
