Just stay the hell away from the water. That's crucial. Drive on the beach. Have fun. I've taken a Toyota Corolla rental to Hatteras with no issues. Just stay away from the water.

No reason to be rude, dude.

Traction boards are GREAT insurance. I've used them a ton of times, snow, ramping, and sand. If you do get stuck, you probably won't need another rig to pull you out. 2 are helpful, but 4 are AWESOME.

Alright, insurance is insurance. Better than a tow bill if you sink it.

Updated first post with an apology. I deserved being called out. I would rather this place call out people for being a dick instead of supporting it. I like you guys.

Drove OBX for years. Tire gauge, maybe a tow strap. Carried a shovel, never used it. 15-20 lbs you should be fine.

Last year was my first time driving in sand. I use air deflaters to air down to 15-20lb and drive in 4H. I just try to keep moving but not too fast to avoid excessive bouncing and bottoming out if the ruts have dips in them. I think this is caused by people not airing down and spinning in the ruts. I have not been stuck yet or even felt like I've come close.

    Good luck

Absolutely the cheapest POS truck you can find. Salt water and sand will ruin a vehicle. You can never get it all off and it will eat your metal alive.

In those great looking commercials where you see a vehicle splashing through the surf you never see the next scene with it in a crusher so no one ever buys it.

Air compressor, tire gauge and a shovel. I just use clip on air chucks with no ends on them from harbor freight to let the air out of my tires. set a timer and put them on all 4. When the timer goes off, take them off and use your tire inflator air chuck to check/adjust the pressure. That’s the cheap way of doing it, anyways! :D

I thought it was cool to cut cookies in the sand until I got sand on my window trapped near the bottom in the rubber piece. Everytime I rolled my windows up and down I could hear the sand scratching the glass. That was in my old 94 4runner.

Been driving on St. Augustine Beach for 20 years. All in a stock 2000 TJ with 31" tires till 2018 when I bought my Tacoma.

Never got stuck, and never aired down my tires.

Around the holidays it's about 3 times worst than this.

Get the deflators if you can swing it. They are awesome. I got the ARB one years ago as a gift, my girlfriend got me the Staun spin on deflators recently and they kick ass.

At the beach I drive out on down on Cape Cod, the below are required. It's all stuff you'd want to have in your vehicle anyways. Check with whatever beach you are going to head out on and see what they require.

    - 12"x12" 3/4" plywood to put under jack
    - Tire pressure gauge that goes down to 5 PSI
    - recovery strap, rope, or chain. Get a strap with loops on both ends, do not get hooks
    - shovel equal or better than the military folding shovel

I think every 4wd should have a snatch strap!

After a beach trip my first stop is always a car wash to make use of their sprayer and vacuum — until I can get home to properly clean. It’s totally worth it, but it seems I’m always vacuuming sand for weeks after I go, haha.

THIS!! Leave your windows open or closed while driving over sand as to not get any sand inside the window. Definitely keep your rear sliding window closed. That little tract will hold enough sand to bug you for years every time you use it.

Hatteras is not difficult. You can probably roll on 4 hi without airing down and be fine. Obviously, you should air down though. I think traction boards are good if you already have them. That would get you out of any pinch. As others have said... stay away from the water.

Hatteras is also not remote like other areas in the OBX. In my opinion, it is overcrowded which makes the surf fishing less enjoyable. You’ll be fine. Use common sense. Enjoy!
