alot of stuff but its easy
you need front 4wd hubs and bearings and cvs
a 4wd auto trans out of a tacoma 05-15 of FJ cruiser
a FJ cruiser tcase for a auto trans
    front and rear driveshafts
a ADD switch that you can get from rocksolidtoyotas
a 4wd crossmember will need to be modded tho
and you wil need to mod you exhuast for under the tcase

but you can go look at my pics and see what all i did

Be easiest to find a donor 4x4 truck that's wrecked in the rear or no longer running for cheap. Otherwise just start sourcing the parts one by one

Unless you are a mechanic with unlimited time, money and tools, here are your steps:

    1. Sell 2x4 Taco.

    2. Use funds from sale to purchase 4x4 Taco.

    3. Hit trail, shift in 4x4 and get those tires dirty.

Just out of curiosity, why would you want to go through the process of converting a 2wd Tacoma to a 4wd Tacoma when they came 4wd from the factory?

I understand converting rigs to 4wd that never came as a 4wd (like my Ford E350 van), but spending the money to convert something that you can already buy from the factory with 4wd doesn't seem economical to me...especially if you have to pay someone else to do it.

I know members on here with first gens that have done the swap themselves in a couple days for around $1,000 in (used) parts...much cheaper than buying a new truck in most cases.

That's assuming you do most or all of the work yourself, otherwise the labor costs could easily make just buying a 4x4 the better option.

First gens were MUCH MUCH easier to convert to 4wd compared to 2nd gens as you could get a front diff clamshell without ADD and run manual hubs and they all had a manual tcase... no computer or electronic wizzardy needed.

Seriously OP, sell the truck n buy a 4x4, gonna be much easier and the same or similar price. That and when you also have to consider when you do go to sell your truck you have to explain the fact you did all this mechanical work as its not technically a 4x4 originally, that turns people off real quick.

I can't believe this is a better option than buying what you want. Good luck.

I think it would be quicker and more cost effective to sell the 2wd truck and purchase a 4wd truck. You have to factor in the downtime as well if you dont have a second vehicle to get around in.
