I think that's the problem: some people want this to be a full size truck...others (like me) want it to be a small size truck. It's doing neither extremely well. IMO it is the best small truck in America...but it's just terribly sad and ironic that you can get much better (small truck) in foreign markets.

As far as the V6: my point is that for a 4.0 litre, it should be making more power in it's NA condition. We're stuck with bad MPG because it's so big, why not let us have the HP?

Conversely: if all Toyota wanted us to have was a small truck with 236 HP, why not give us a decently tuned 3.5 litre instead? The same 236 HP, but the smaller displacement let's us enjoy better MPG (when the foots not in it, of course.)

Who are they REALLY making happy with this solution?

I could not agree more. This pretty much hits the nail square on the head. Either bring back the smaller taco (and do it right with a solid front axle and discs all around with an available diesel) or keep the current size taco and for cryin' out loud put a freakin' ENGINE in there so it can be used like a full-size truck (which it is) AND lose the IFS AND replace the IFS with a solid front axle AND disc brakes all around. They would sell a million of those trucks if they pull their head out of their collective butt and just listen to us!

My dislikes, but have since been fixed.

No light under the hood. (fixed)
    No hood struts. (fixed)
No lights in the bed, im always loading a motorcycle or something so that would be nice.
and the fact that when i walk away from my truck i turn and look at it a minimum of 3 times before i make it inside.

Why not JUST bring back the smaller taco? The Tundra was and is their full size - it would have been natural to differentiate the Tundra line into light duty, heavy duty and even super duty if they wanted.

And a double thumbs up to the diesel idea...just another reason to hate the EPA for killing the diesel in small engine markets.

Does this thread ever make you wonder why some people bought a Tacoma at all ?

I bought my latest due to remembering how good the other three trucks were. Unfortunately this one does not follow through with the same quality. However saying that does not mean it is not a good truck, only that I did not research adequately before making an impulse purchase. The volume of issues and complaints with the last gen taco is indicative of a need to tighten up seriously on the quality control and become a lot more proactive with feature development on the trucks to keep them current. As said before, the truck as a platform has a lot of potential. Whether toyota follows through is up to them.

Not in the least: it just shows some people aren't uncritical fan-boys about their choice.

Also bought my new Tacoma having had a excellent experience with previous generation Toyota pickups. The only area where this truck has meet my expectations is fuel mileage. This thing sounds like its falling apart on anything more than a minor road imperfection. Its steering is so vague and imprecise, wanders on the freeway worse than any vehicle I have owned. And let's not even talk about road and wind noise.

In summary, I just feel cheated. That is a strong statement, but I find myself more and more, not returning to companies (not just car companies) that deliver a iffy product, and except us not to complain, because the company had a sterling reputation for quality. Every Toyota executive should have to drive a 2 year old Tacoma for a year, and then they will realize what a POS this generation truck is.

With the quality issues being mentioned for the 2nd Gens, look on the ID tag on your door jam and see where it was manufactured. I think all the tacos are being manufactured in California or somewhere in the USA? My 2006 was made in California. My 1stGen Taco and my 2005 4Runner were made in Japan.

That would be neat if everyone could list their place of manufacture and maybe they all have something in common.

The Canadian trucks were made at the NUMMI plant , they make Toyotas up here but not the Tacoma .

Owner for 1 week, so far I dislike.

    No lock on the tailgate
    No stake pockets
T-Case control button in the dash, a shifter would have been funnier and better looking
Seat height can't be adjusted, I really miss that from my FJ.
Small tank. I sometimes had to carry 60 liters extra with the FJ's 72 Liters tank, 80L on the Taco isn't much better.

I guess some are wondering why I bought it :)

My only complaint is not having the money to mod this thing. Truck runs great, no vibrations, rattles, shakes, or any of the other complaints I read in the various threads. On the highway, I get 21-23 mpg, combined driving I get 16-18, so no complaints there.
