Don't know much about Alabama climate, but rain is bad for dates. That is the reason, even though dates can be grown in just about any hot climate, in FL they don't grow dates. They have palm trees in FL, but due to the rain, the dates will get kind of moldy, and they can't be eaten/sold at all.

What you can do (something I do) because I don't have the equipment for tall date trees, is that once they grow to a certain height, I take them out and sell them to home developments. Large developments pay a very good amount per tree. So even if yours is not fruit bearing, there are other ways of making money, granted you have access to land and water.

    Good luck.

Sorry I don't sell anything here or to anybody. I have a 5 year contract with my distributor who takes the fruits. I have no processing equipment. Everything is done by hand by illegal immigrants, at $2/hr.

I just have automatic packaging equipment that is bought from a company in China.

I am happy to share the knowledge to pay it forward, as someone had done for me :)

Man that sounds cool! Too bad my favorite plant is illegal in all states but where do you find property for $5,000 per acre? I don't understand what you mean. If you invested $40k into a well I'm sure you either own or long term lease?

    1) San Bernardino county

    2) Date plants need water like no ones business
If I use city water my bill would be over $15,000 a month

Digging a well and dipping into the ground water system well and machines cost me $40,000. It is a one time investment

    That is a substantial investment
Also county made a rule as long as your property is next to each other you can run the same well,.... thus I have bought property all in the same line as not to install lot more wells

All my land is owned. No leases.

I buy, restore, and sell vintage saxophones. And play sax in wedding & party bands. Cause I'm a sax addict.

I have a couple but none of them are steady. I've made picnic tables and adirondack chairs. I've run a 'property services' business that included mowing and trimming, tree removal, power washing, storm cleanup, etc. I've sold wood by the cord cut, split, & delivered. I've done light mechanical repairs on cars, tractors, boats, trailers, etc. I've plowed snow and shoveled walks during the winter. None have ever been advertised other than word-of-mouth, though, so they've always just been the occasional side gig. I have sort of gotten out of the habit with my current job, though, since after working a 55 hour week the last thing I want to do is go do a side job with what little spare time I have left.

I respect your opinion, but I choose to run my hustle how it works for me. I paid them the same $2/hr when for 3 years I just planted and had no returns.

Amount of profit I make has no bearing on what I will pay my employees. This isn't a profit sharing business.

They come for 2 weeks at a time, free room and board and transportation. Breakfast and dinner included at my cost.

I don't have shortage of employees, which tells me the wage is acceptable in that community.

Its a cash, no questions asked business. My employees speak no english, have no car, and have no other skills. We pick them up, they stay two weeks, pick/sort dates 10 hours a day. They we drive them back, and pick up a new set for the following two weeks.

BUCKLE UP! It makes it harder for Aliens to pull you out of your Truck.
A friend moved far away... he raises Beefalo. The Asian market buys every one he can produce (just the head of a Beefalo sells for 3k). His wife makes 18k/year raising chickens. Me? I’m an idiot
