What do you do when Toyota says they will not replace your rusting frame that they recalled?

This is interesting. Apparently this is only available in Canada because it contains oil and we're not allowed to spray oil on the bottom of our cars.

I've talked to a few older guys in the industry who said they spray motor oil on everything under their truck to keep it from rusting. If I lived where that was a problem I'd have my taco all lubed up under there.

I was hoping we’d see an update on the timelines of everything from OP rather than dropping a dealers name multiple times then leaving. Curious when it was initially “inspected” at the dealer despite OP not knowing about the recall until his mechanic informed him some 8 months after noticing his exhaust was sagging.

He did say he was going to get something other than a Toyota. He might be on a Subaru forum now.

This dude bought a used truck 7 years ago, probably didn’t maintain it appropriately and is now butt hurt to hear that 12 year warranties only last for 12 years. Wash your truck regularly, pay attention to its condition and it will last you longer than 12 years.

Or you can do like I am doing. Park it during the winter months. I was pressure washing the frame during the winter months every week but it was rusting anyways. I have a 2017 and want it to last long term.

Boost, armor, lights, big tires, no savings.
If you live in an area that salts the roads, it does not matter how much you wash and pay attention. It is gonna rust. Parking in a heated garage to let the snow/ ice melt off every night can make things worse from the temp cycles.
Not everyone can afford to park the truck over the winter. And for some, a truck is the only way to get through the winter.
We all have different situations and use cases.

Does anyone know where I can get a frame for 2004 Toyota Tacoma for a reasonable price in Maryland?

I will never buy another Toyota truck because of this issue. My 2008 crew cab frame was inspected and deemed good only to have it rust just after the "warrenty" extension ran out. I never received the notification of a second check and Toyota doesn't care.

Did you consider just taking care of your vehicle? Steel rusts and Toyota is the only OEM changing frames 10 years in, every other maker just shrugs.

    @hoarder23
I have gone to extra lengths to maintain my truck since buying it new, as I planned on keeping it long term. Just wait, and if you actually have a Toyota truck you will be mad like everyone else when the frame rusts and you have 15 year old truck that cost $50k that is unsafe to drive.

Seems like paying $50k for a 15 year old truck was your first mistake.

I'm currently at year 5 with my 2nd Tacoma, this one a 2015 that spent 2 years parked at the ocean every night and then moved to the Northeast. Keeping it clean and treating problems early means no issue with frame rot.

Frame rust has been a known issue for Tacomas since before I bought my first in 2012, not sure why you are shocked a 15 year old truck that was solidly part of one recall and at least one warranty extension had an issue, most people pay more attention when they are aware on a common issue with something they value.

If you are bored go take a look under 5 year old Rams/Chevys and tell me if you think they are doing better

Small lift, slightly oversized tires, well...
Obviously not, or your frame wouldn't have rotted. My '06 looked great when I sold it @ 200k miles and my '17 w/120k on the clock still looked nearly new when I sprayed it with Woolwax this fall. It amazes me how few people, especially in the rust belt, spray the underside of their vehicles in the winter. Mine go through the wash at least twice a week once the salt comes out.

Every fall I do the same. My frame looks like brand new.

It’s called the rust belt for a reason. Living where I do may cost more but at least that’s not one of those costs.

I was aware of the 1st gen issues when I bought my 2010, as my wife owned a 96. Thought they had it licked but it seems not of course..I learned that my year/run was getting inspected after owning it a few years and hadn't done anything yet, it passed and got a coating from Toyota. I knew I had to get a second inspection prior to 12 yrs from first date of use, but at 11.5 yrs I found 2 holes on the passenger side rail. The dealer took it from me quickly, got me in a rental, and did everything they were supposed to do fortunately.

...exactly. ....my 09', purchased new by me in 08', has been taken care of and I have it sprayed annually, and it looks far better than some of the 6-7 year old trucks potential buyers post pictures of on here asking for opinions on vehicles they are looking at. ...I convert the rust every fall, and paint touch up those areas, prior to krowned re-sprays, and have never had any rust on the straight frame sections between from and rear wheel areas,. and basically only need to treat those front and rear wheel areas portions of the frame, and to the front, and in the rear hitch areas. ....nothing at all near catalytic, and slight delamination nearer to rear wheel wells, which I especially treat each fall, after 15-16 buffalo area winters.

....and not a spec of rust on any painted body panels, tail gate, etc., and including on inner seams along the bottoms, which I also wipe down after every wash.
