I've had no problems. Common sense goes a long way. I've only gotten stuck 2x. Both times trying to pull other people out. The best advice is do not dig your self into a hole. I only needed a push to get moving again.
    Have fun.

Invest in a good tire that can handle the sand as well. I have 4x4 and have only used it a handful of times. Never needed it on the beach though. Locking diffs work pretty well but to be safe, it would be a good idea to have somebody else with you the first few times to pull you out. Getting stuck in the sand is eventually inevitable. Even for us 4x4 owners.

If you can hit the beach right after a rain, the sand will be packed and make
driving easier. Ditto with driving next to the water during low tide.

Bed mat huh??? Never thought of that. I would think that would be a little bulky to get under your tires, esp. if you needed to dig a bit. I did see some foldable ramp like contraption that were close to the width of a tire, and could be placed fairly easily behind the tire if getting buried. Come to think of it, I'm gonna try and find them again.

It can be a big help, no doubt about it. I've dug a friend or two out with mine.

The bed mat is a great idea. I've seen one used for that very purpose before.

There always has to be one. BTW I had a 4Runner for 11 years and only used the 4 wheel drive while off-roading a couple of times.

Besides without prerunners to pull out of the sand you wouldn't really have any need for your 4x4.:D

    Best advice yet... ^

I (in 4WD, before TRAC) would run at 15 psi, but if that still didn't float (sand conditions change) or if I had 3 ply sidewall mud tires, drop it to 10 psi... get yourself out without a bed mat or a pull. Mexicans in Baja use 2WD on the beaches all the time to get their nets and boats... bald tires and low low pressure on all 4 tires... in 2WD. Aggressive mud tires are terrible, and light tread are best...The Rugged Trails work fine in the sand at 15 psi.

The new '10 Tacoma with TRAC in H4 didn't need any air removed from the tires... a first on the Baja beach south of San Felipe!

Keep moving don't stop. if you do don't feather the gas or it will dig in. Even with Tires made for sand it will dig. Also this was wet sand.

Just keep a steady foot. It was my own fault, I was going too slow and tried to speed up and it dug in and I threw it in reverse and went forward and when it went forward it went bumper to the sand.
