I live in a 1k sqft condo with my wife and 3 year old with a baby on the way.
We need to upsize not downsize.

That's good advice and I agree with you out borrowing when possible, as my neighbor and I both do with each other.

I'd do it in a heartbeat if I didnt have a family. I'd plop one on an acre in the woods and build a little 600sq. ft. shop next to it.

I have about 1100 square feet. Don't think I could ever do a tiny house because:

    1. I have 4 cats. No kids which helps, but even as 100% indoor kitties they need room to play and such. Plus with one door I'd be concerned about potential for escape.

    2. Not that I can use it year round, but I've always wanted a pool. I finally got one 6 yrs ago and it stays open 5 months of 12 and I use it every day.

    3. My schedule doesn't really work for joining a gym so I do my treadmill and lift weights at home.

    4. Not a need, but I've had the pool table I grew up playing on for 6 yrs now..still saving to get it installed.

    5. I'd have to purge a lot of stuff like my CD collection. I'm not joking, I own over 1500 discs alone.

    6. Having to pay rent on a lot/space to park it

I live in one that's just under 200 sqft. It's myself, my lady, and our two dogs. We transitioned from a 700 sqft apartment so the jump wasn't too drastic and we already lived a fairly minimalistic "outdoorsy" lifestyle so downsizing wasn't that challenging. The only thing that really requires storage are my mountain bikes.

We got super lucky and found a guy on Craigslist who was specifically looking to rent some space to a tiny house. He owns 23 acres and has a motocross addiction so he built a huge shop and lets me store my 3 bikes in there. He even gives me access to the space and tools when I need to wrench on them. Seemed like a good fit so we jumped on it, now we're good buddies.

Best part is the financial freedom. Worst part is all the miscellaneous stuff that you need but don't have room for (coolers, camping gear, etc). That stuff either sits on the outside or in my truck bed.

Don't let haters talk it down. People have been living simple lives forever, it just hasn't been mainstream. There's nothing wrong with wanting a smaller space and wanting to make it feel like a home rather than a trailer. With that being said though, I definitely don't think it's for everyone. You have to be at the right place in life to really enjoy it, I think.

My parents own a vacation "home" down by the beach in Virginia. They have owned it since I was 12 or 13. It is legally a camper, but it is a huge camper. 41' long, normal camper width, and 70% of the rear wall slides out 3' to expand the floor plan as well. It has 2 true bedrooms (not just a curtain) livingroom, kitchen, and bath.

It has always been nice to have a inexpensive place to disappear to, but I don't know if I could live like that. In the evening when you want to wind down, its hard to disappear from people. If my parents were in the back room watching TV I could easily hear it in the front, or if someone had a extreme experience in the bathroom, everyone knew about it.

In more recent years I have used it much more without my family, either by myself, or bringing whoever I was seeing at the time down. The small confines are much more tolerable and I could see myself living with 1 person MAX, assuming there was lots of outdoor activities(such as our place at the beach)

There are so many factors to consider and a big one is like the previous poster thejurgy stated, the place you are in your life, as well as the things we sometimes forget, like you just brought up.

Absolutely correct. For my family it was great while growing up, and my mother still spends nearly the entire summer using it.

Both my parents were teachers, making good money, but not enough to drop $300k on a tiny house in a vacation town(Chincoteague VA). This was bought for $25K, which was highly over priced, but allowed us to skip a 7+ yr wait list. Rent on the lot started at $2k a year. For these prices, our family had to give up some comforts, but we had a beach place. Definitely worth it.

Did you you divide the room with you and your brothers on one side and your sisters on the other? I had a bedroom with my 2 brothers (10 X 8), but with sisters it must have been tough, especially in the teens.

I live in a 1,138 sq/ft home with my wife, three kids, and a dog. We have more than enough room.

My wife and I have talked about a tiny home when the kids move out. A couple of acres of land with a workshop/garage and a tiny house.

It deters family from coming to visit. "Guest room? Sure, let me get the tent and you can go set it up outside."
