I recently purchased a car for my son but got a call today for a Ford maverick at msrp. I’d still keep my Tacoma but kinda like the maverick for my 18 yo son. What have you heard about it’s reliability, it’s fairly new so I don’t have much info…I can probably sell the car I bought for him for the same money I purchased it.

its fine for a kid, the first one always gets ran ragged.

anything that you can get for a deal that isn't going to fall apart due to burn-outs will work. lol

Then it’s probably best to keep the one he’s got already :).

I think that’s great. If he takes care of that for a couple years then he can get a new truck?

My son got a Subaru Cross trek. Last yr of high school all through engineering college and MBA. So, seven years. He only put 78K miles on it but... Not a body panel was dent free... The interior was worn down in places that shouldn't be worn.
It was seriously a salvage title when through. Lol he just bought a Tesla model Y. He treats it much better.

I think you are right why spend more for a first car. Before buying I was looking at the maverick but they had a markup and I told the dealer to give a call once they took the bs markup off and they called today…

I handed down my 2001 tacoma to my son that I had for 15 years, less than a year he ran it into a pillar on a entrance ramp, he was fine, but the truck was totaled, sad
day for me, I loved that truck, was keeping it in the family :)

Made both my sons get jobs at 15 told them as soon as they had half the $ for a car I’d pony up the other half for a used car. Both kids did great had cars at 16 both drove them through HS then they both went to college bought their own new cars and have NEVER borrowed a dime from me or their mother since. Plus I forced them at a young age to call the insurance company and work their own deals and to fix their own cars. You need to be on your kids at a young age if you want them to survive in the real world.

Lol. My kid got a bonus this year that was more than my salary+bonus combined. Pretty sure he can survive. He is 26. I am 59. He is me 4.0.

I hate to pop your bubble... but the MSRP has a bs markup built in to it.

If you really want to shake a new car salesman (if they have enough experience they'll know what you're talking about) ask them what "the hold back is" on a vehicle. The hold back is the hidden profit.

I'm not a believer in buying kids cars. Especially anything I have to insure.

Kids should buy their own cars and pay for their own insurance and gas. Lots of good lessons involved in becoming responsible... (or not)
