I use a spare iPhone on airplane mode. No calls at all! They have a lot of different displays the one shown is just the one I choose to use. The whole set up can be swapped from vehicle to vehicle in a few seconds. The plx obdII reader was as much as the scan gauge at the time when purchased. As stated before in a post obdII readers can be purchased for like 7 bucks.
As far as real gauges go I believe everything now is all computer based. No actual cable for speedo or actual hoses for oil pressure just electrical connections. Probably wrong but any way my base taco has limited "real gauges" Temp, tach, gas, speed.
I can clear codes with it as well, seems I use it on coworkers GM's for this more than anyone else!
The biggest pain is shutting the iPhone off at the end of my trip.
I also turn the obd reader off sucks the newer version sleeps on its own and is cheaper.
You can make your own displays as well picking what you want to see and leaving off what you don't want to see.
I use this in multiple vehicles as well. Never had the scan gauge or ultra gauge so I won't be a critic on it because I don't use it..
Could be better don't know. But they use the obd port as well so the info all comes from the same place. Oh yea by the way my future son in law had a cheap reader melt while plugged in his truck.

I measure MPG with good old fashioned math. My UG always shows less MPG than what I actually get. Engine condition is measured by the skinny pedal:burnrubber:

I agree the right foot is the mpg factor. Do scan gauge or ultra gauge show speed as well.
Not sure if its the way I sit, my height or where I have my steering wheel but my speedo is obstructed from view. Not just the taco it was in my impalas also. I'm gonna have to check against a fill up but my speedo is whack so mileage is gonna be as well?
Speed is dead nuts with the dash command compared to the cops this is how fast your going trailers.
They even have cop lights that flash at 6mph over lol.

My ultragauge shows speed. I have not checked accuracy. My speedo shows about 3mph over actual speed @ 70mph (as do most Toyotas).

I don't have instant feedback but I do compare tanks.

    Tools:
    Tire pressure monitor
    Calculator
    Notepad
    Pen
    Rear view thermometer

I keep a notepad in the truck so I can keep track.

Other than a phone app for each fill up I simply reset the trip on every fill up. Looking for better than 72 when it gets to full then 225ish miles at the half tank is around 21mpg. This last time I was at 240 so guessing 22.x mpg. Will post later today when I fill up.

Alpine X008U With idata link module that reads the ecu and displays it on the screen. It reads the same shit the scan gauge tools read. And you can use the steering wheel controls to turn it on and off. It reads live data.

Ya it's really cool but you have to wire it all in to the harnesses there is no plug in play as I know off. But I did it all last Nov. Maybe it's changed. Haven't looked you use a laptop to program it all you can pick how you want the controls to work and you get more the stock opinions. If you buy alpine it has a tacoma dash kit. To fit 8" screen.

Just to update everyone- I decided on the ultra-gauge because of a balance of cost, function, and ease of use. I plugged it in this morning and used it on a trip to work. Cant wait to tinker with it and get it set up how I want. Regardless of calibration it has already done exactly what I wanted and that is to show me what RPM range is more efficient and when to shift. 2000 RPM in 3rd is much better than 1500 RPM in 4th. I anticipate a huge jump in MPG.
