This is spot on. There are already rolling brown outs in major metropolitan areas. My other concerns with a fully electric off-road vehicle are. First, how will the vehicle peform in the wet of winter snow, water crossings and mud. Secondly now when going backcountry you will have to carry fuel and a generator.

Im pretty sure you can charge an EV just with an appropriate number of solar panels without even being plug-in to a grid.

It doesn’t need to fully impact the grid. With every house having solar, we should be fine at least in my area (west/south west). For other regions, it’s going to be a problem for sure.

However, I drive maybe 20-30 miles each day. I struggle to understand why I would even need range of 850 miles. In fact, I’m looking to buy a used Nissan Leaf with 100mile range tops. I don’t need anything else.

These desires will all come to pass, sooner than you think, with the exception of the 2 naked ladies.

Electric air-taxis are on the horizon, ( JOBY )... battery technology of this scale is still in its infancy but is evolving rapidly.
Living in the desert the solar thoughts are interesting for sure.

Yes, the by product of these batteries isn't pretty, and in some respects produce just as much pollution as oil, however I suspect these will be much
easier to resolve than what we've seen over the last 100+ years of oil pollution. And don't forget that producing the electricity to charge these massive
batteries has its own set of issues.

Will it save the planet?... no, too late for that.
Will it save our pocketbooks?... no, too late for that as well.

I'm moreso referring to on the grid when out and about. Home charging should not be an issue, but trip range and using the vehicle for anything other than running around town can be an issue - especially as batteries age and range suffers. Not to mention how long it takes to charge the current EV's @ charging stations. Plus for a 4x4 application, it's going to stress the batteries much more due to load and likely wear them down significantly faster. Sure you can do things like on-board solar and regenerative braking to help recharge, but in general it's a big nope from me dawg.

I left my battery powered leaf blower out in the rain. I was surprised it still worked, but then the battery would not take a charge.

I'm sure the batteries in a BEV are a little more advanced, and might be better sealed.

What happens if you drive your F-150 Lightning through flood water, maybe just a foot or two of water on the road. Something that can be quite common when driving through low elevations. Will the batteries stop working, or no longer accept a charge?

Big heavy powerful trucks need big heavy expensive batteries that require loonngg recharge times. A step backwards, Me thinks!

Built in generator for when you can't get a full charge and ability to operate off that generator to the electric motors (just in case). Also, solar ready.

Aren't the batteries sealed and liquid cooled?

I don’t see diesel going away any time soon, but I could see petro engines declining in demand.

freight is carried by either Diesel electric trains or diesel semis. There’s no viable alternative for those transportation methods

Only aesthetic mods so far Leer 180 cap & Clazzio covers on order.
What do I want from an E/V Taco - nothing. However, if it should come to market before I'm ready to replace my '21 TRD OR, my 'Must haves' are:
    - Fully recyclable and environmentally friendly batteries made in the USA from non-Chinese components.
    - Batteries that'll last at least 10 years before replacement is necessary.
    - Reasonable recharging time from a home-based 240VAC charger.
    - Cheaper electric rates in CT (currently paying 24.6¢ per kWH).
    - Less 'Mommy-state' features.
    - Same or better payload & towing capabilities.
    EDIT:
    - Would much rather see a Hybrid Diesel/electric with self-charging capability.

I think they are air cooled, sealed probably. It might not be possible to saturate the sealed batteries, as they can prove difficult to extinguish once ignited. I guess the cooling system becomes ineffective, and that's what causes the batteries to ignite in a crash.

Sometimes the entire vehicle/battery has to be submerged, and there is an extinguishing system that pierces the battery to get water to it.

    Edit I meant liquid cooled.

Also my previous post about accessories preserving rechargeable battery life. Probably has no impact on batterylife/range. I think all accessories are powered from the 12v system, like ice. Istill like the idea, if 12v isn't powering accessories.
I doubt if it's a common situation, probably about as common as hydro locking an ice vehicle in flood water. Less BEVs on the road, so it isn't likely. I'm still interested in what the outcome is.

Did someone compare leaving a leaf blower out in the rain to driving a truck through 2 ft of water?

    None.
BEV pick-up’s suck for towing duties. Hook up an RV and the Lightning’s range dropped from 300+ to < 100 miles of driving the Colorado front range. Imagine what happens in cold weather with four snowmobiles on the trailer …
