What documentation can/should I request from the dealership?

I ordered a 2021 MG DCLB OR on June 18th with a $500 deposit. The dealership said that the allocation info would become clear after July 1st. I told them I wanted information about status and such. I called and spoke to the salesperson and he reiterated that he would get me something concrete by yesterday. He didn't call. I believe I ordered a fully loaded Off-Road. I would like to see an inventory of the vehicle that I will receive. What specifically should I request from the dealer? What should they be able to provide to prove it has been ordered and what equipment will be on the truck?

I think Toyota has made the ordering process very confusing. The website lists packages but doesn't seem to be the way the dealerships order vehicles. I'm not sure if my dealership even ordered me a vehicle, they might have assigned an allocation to me but I'm not sure how customized that can be. Dealerships in conjunction with Toyota seem to just confuse the process.

You should have a Sales Contract/Agreement.

    That is your document.

FWIW, you might consider a face to face with your salesman or the sales manager.

I have a sort of deal sheet. That itemizes the costs but doesn't list all the equipment. I will ask for a Sales Contract/Agreement.

What does Toyota provide the dealership once the "order" is placed? Do you know if the dealership gets some kind of notification of what was ordered?

All this is in your contract. Start there & read all of it. Then you have some more “asking power”

I don't have a lengthy sales contract. I basically have a handshake deal memorialized with a one-page sheet and a receipt for the deposit. I'll visit them today and ask for more documentation.

Ask if it's been built yet, if it has it should have an actual VIN and you/they should be able look up build. I think if it's in the que to built, it gets some sort of build number, of course that's not the VIN.
What I'd want to know- has the truck you ordered for me even been built?

    GET A FRIGGIN CONTRACT!!!!

    You're dangling in the wind.............

If they won't lock down a sales contract, ask for your deposit back and calmly run to another dealer.

Right now, you are risking $500 on a $30-40k item on a handshake and a receipt.

Yep. I understand. I will get a contract. If this is too difficult for them I might have to rescind the deal and ask for my deposit back. I appreciate all your help. I have felt very "dangling" since I left the dealership.

I just recently went thru this process, here’s how mine went.

4/15 Dealer found the exact truck I wanted with a future build date in May. Agreed on a final price, signed purchase agreement, left a deposit . Build date was 5/17.

    5/18 I was given my VIN #.

5/20 Truck was shipped from Mexico est. 30-45 day to delivery.

6/15 Dealer called to say Truck would be in next day.

6/18 Paid the balance and took truck home.

Several other dealers I had tried all wanted deposits, but they weren’t able to get me signed purchase agreements. Basically they wanted a deposit to put my name on a list for when something close showed up. They did say deposit was refundable, but I wanted something more concrete before I left any money down.

Fine example of straight clear business using a contract, the purchase agreement.:thumbsup:

I've contacted the salesperson. I will have a contract or rescind the deal and begin the search again.

I asked my dealer for a build sheet and they said it was hard to come by. I got a detailed list of added options and prices. My salesman has been sending me screen shots of the build process. Basically shows the build start date, build end date, date put on rail head, date taken off rail head and estimated date of delivery. And there is a “last seen” update that shows where the last scan of the vehicle was.

First, a dealership does not order directly from Toyota. They order from one of twelve distributors throughout the US.
Once they place an order, chances are the distributor already has one like the one you want and fulfils the order.
The dealer and distributor order packages with codes not real words, just like any large OEM.

Crosbaugh said it, you should have the temporary VIN now. You can check dealer daily.toyota.com, it will bring up your spec sheet. Need the VIN, or you can google it, or go to Toyota owners site.

Build sheet hard to come by ? Bull crap. Looks like they are going to say, "market price", if you do not have a signed agreement.

I have a signed document with pricing but it isn't specific as to the equipment included.

It should have details covering which Model, Trim Level, Options and Add-On equipment. It should also have details about Sales Price and your deposit.

Note: The "options" could be packages that include multiple goodies.

I spoke with the dealership again this morning. They provided me the VIN number and a screenshot of their information that it is scheduled for production in Baja 08-06. I feel better now. Thanks for all the advice.

When you get a temp VIN, you can see the entire spec sheet at Vehicle Specification | Toyota Owners

Once it's build, you'll get an error on the VIN number because it was only a temporary, pre-production VIN.
