Just bought a cluster to do a cluster swap to get a tach in my truck. On the left side where it indicates engine temp, there is "A/T P" and "A/T Oil Temp" written. Does that stand for Automatic transmission?
This tac, supposedly came out of a 4cyl, 5spd, so I'm a little confused. Also a little angry b/c I have a 4cyl, 5spd, and supposedly you have to get the tac from a truck with same engine and trans, or the RPMs will be incorrect.

I searched through countless photos, and found automatic trucks without that written there, and one pic of a manual with it, so now I'm a mixture of confused/angry, and if I didn't just spend $100 on this stupid cluster, I'd shoot it.

That's what I figured. Dangit. Looks like it came out of an automatic and not a manual. Which I'm told is not compatible with my manual truck.

Plug it in and see what you get. Someone here could probably confirm the values for you. It might work, might not.

Yea, I was thinking about that, and I'm sure the tachometer would move, just not sure if it'll read the correct RPMs, being different transmissions.

Do you really need an analog RPM gauge? A scangauge will give a digital readout of of RPMs, and so much more.

I prefer the stock look. I had an edge in my last truck and it even came with a pod that matched the dash, but still didn't have the clean look of stock. Plus my current gas gauge is reading wrong, so that is also swaying my decision to a new cluster.

The auto/manual cluster may be the same. They don't always make different faces for different configurations. My '95 Suburban cluster had the sockets and lettering for the 6.5l Diesel.

Yea, I searched ebay, and autotrader yesterday for two hours looking at pics of tacomas. Found a dozen or so pics of automatic trucks with those indicators, but no manuals. Found a lot more of auto trucks that didn't have these indicators. Guess this is a rare cluster for an auto.

Since this cluster did come out of an automatic, what about it's rpm readings would make it read wrong putting it in a manual. Is it some pre-programmed computer stuff that'll give me a headache just thinking about, or something else all together?

**Added pic for better reference, also one with part number incase someone has the book-o-part numbers sitting beside them.**

Doesn't the tach read the signal from the distributor or ignition coil?

Tach will work off of engine RPM not off of drive through transmission. There could be a difference between 4 and 6 cyl. The older aftermarket tachs usually had a wire you had to change to be able to use in 4, 6, or 8 cylinder vehicles. Try it and see is my opinion.

Plugged it in and RPMs seem to be reading low. Guessing the cluster came out of a 6cyl.

Drove around, and with my normal shifting, I never got to 2k rpms. If I rev'd it out, I made it over 2k (on the tach), but sounded like it was running higher.

For example, running in third gear, speedo said 40mph, and tach read about 1500.

To top it all off, I broke the surround taking it out. It was stuck somehow around the left vent. FML, I'm done with working on this truck. Putting the old cluster in, going to order a new surround, then not touching another thing on this truck.
