I wear a watch to tell time. I do have two: one with leather strap, one with metal. They are both just around $100 but I didn't buy either one. I think fine watches are nice but I'm not all about them and I don't feel naked if I forget to wear it.

I know a couple of guys that live and breathe watches. "Watches tells others about you." Whatever. What makes a man? The intangibles in life make a man. WHO you are, not WHAT you are.

I wear a watch simply because I want to know what time it is. I'm not into fancy brands. I think the watch I wear everyday might have cost about $50. But then again, I'm retired and don't have to worry about whether or not my watch goes with the outfit I'm wearing that particular day.

I feel naked when I leave my apartment without my watch. Go surfing most mornings so I need the watch to make sure I'm not too late for work. Then I have a nice watch to wear for times when I'm not in the ocean or at work.

I also feel naked without my watch on. I take it off only to shower and when playing sports. Any time I forget it at home, my whole day just seems off. I am the same way with my promise ring and chain. Every couple years I invest in a new Fossil watch. Typically only the battery would need replacing, but I like to have a fresh, good looking watch on my wrist. I constantly use it to tell the time, even though my iPhone can give me the same information. It's just a habit I've had my entire life.

Interesting fact, my watch is currently 65 minutes fast. I am always late so I try to give myself a "head start", though I unconsciously subtract the 5 minutes when I am checking the time. The other 60 minutes is because I prefer the spring forward time rather than the fall back, so I am being rebellious by not changing it. Strange, I know. But it makes me happy. :)

    The Genuine Special Forces Watch.

Made to the stringent specifications of the U.S. Military (#MIL-W-46374), this is the tactical watch supplied to members of the CIA, FBI, and Secret Service. The watch and band are made of solid stainless steel, protected by the highest grade brushed black titanium carbide (TiC) plating. An external LED--the brightest available on a watch--pierces the dark from up to a mile away to send a distress signal or to illuminate maps. An internal LED illuminates the dial, though time can be easily read in total darkness thanks to numbers and hands that utilize superluminous technology. A tempered, scratch-resistant mineral glass crystal protects the face, a carbon fiber dial provides shock resistance, and a locking case back and screw-down crown ensure water resistance to 330'. Quartz movement provides precise, reliable timekeeping. The watch's rechargeable lithium-ion battery is rated for 10 years and recharges without cables using the included electromagnetic charger. The adjustable 1"-wide band fits wrists 5" to 8 1/2". One of only 5,000 produced, each watch is individually numbered. Made in the U.S. 1 3/4" Diam. x 1/2" D. (2 3/4 oz.)

What else can a watch do?

It's possible to determine your orientation using an analog watch (i.e., one with hands) in place of a compass. The direction will be correct if the watch is set for true local time, without adjustments for daylight savings time. And the further you are from the equator, the more accurate this method will be.
In the northern hemisphere, hold the watch horizontal and point the hour hand in the direction of the sun. Bisect the angle between the hour hand and the twelve o'clock mark to get the north-south line. North will be the direction further from the sun.

Know the time, but don't have an analog watch? A simple drawing of a watch on a piece of paper, as long as it shows the correct time (you only need worry about the hour hand), works just as well.
Can't see the sun clearly, or otherwise having difficulty determining its direction? As long as the sun is able to cast a shadow (which it can often do even through fog), you can determine its direction by holding a thin object (like a pencil or a stick) straight up and down; the resulting shadow will point away from the sun.

Wonder why you're bisecting angles? As the earth rotates once (each day), the hour hand goes around the clock face twice. So you need to divide the angle by two (i.e., in half).

Been using this trick for a year or so - definitely does come in handy in the country.

Despite cell phone having time as well as tacomas , I wear a watch, I'm 43.
wore one since i was a kid.Dad said be back for dinner, i knew how long i can play and get back on time. didnt think of it , but it sets up the adult habit of timeliness.

Wore it in the Navy ,87-93, set it close to a cesium beam onboard clock, target motion analysis required minute by minute status(fancy way of saying tracking),and we logged a lot of data to paper.

I see no need to stop weraring a watch, despite some people pointing out its on my cell phone, I have 2 cells, mine and work's.
I tell them to tell me the sun rises in the east,I already know that too.7 clocks here n there in my house and work truck, I still wear a watch , i hunt , ski , hike. I like it handy on the wrist.

Rolex's are interesting, but since im mostly practical, i wear a $40-50 Timex , water proof , with the face recessed so i dont scratch the face up.

How my watch makes me appear?People over 30 or so may not even notice. How about a 12 or 16 year old looks at me? That doesnt matter. If they think we dont "get it" since a cell has a clock , we do get it.Those same kids have no clue that a tv can be turned on manually, I even pointed it out to them.

I'm paid by gas tax , being a city employee. If my watch said one thing, i'd like other taxpayers (since i am one too) to see that time is important to me since it's also money, your gas money and mine. Our life shouldnt be slaved to time, but time should be a valuable tool for us to plan life better.Hell , maybe i'll get a pocket watch, and put asundial in the yard , its about time i do.
