I moded 1999 Taco so much it had turned to Land Cruiser
Hmm maybe she has more expensive Marlin. I looked at ones below $200 range and none had that future. How does hers lock (is there a button or something)?
Person i n the store tried to figure out if Marlin has this option with out success.
Tried Mossberg and there was no way to lock it (or we did not knew how to )
Ruger has a tiny switch in front of the trigger (in between the magazine release button) So when one pulls the bolt back and presses the switch bolt stays open.

You might check your local pawn shops, you may find a used 10/22 for less than 200.

Good looking out. Repeated dry-firing also causes the firing pin to strike the edges of the chamber and peen/dent them in, which will eventually get so bad that you can't cycle/chamber a round.

That little cut you're seeing is for the extractor to slide in to when the bolt goes into battery (closed). When you fire the gun the bolt comes back and the extractor comes out of that slot yanking the fired casing out of the chamber.

A lot of .22s have a bolt hold open feature, some just aren't as easily noticed as others. With a number of the Marlin guns you push or pull on the charging handle and it locks into a notch to hold open. If you found a 10/22 for $200 get that though, they are the best semi-auto .22 on the market for less than $500 and are very easy to maintain, accurate, and cheap to feed. :D
