Can't seem to find any info in the manual nor is the description very helpful. What exactly does the Driver Setting feature do?

The driver setting feature will allow the system to link some preferences (such as audio presets, button colors, language, etc.,) to a paired bluetooth phone.

Thats what i'm thinking... I saw this screen and never questioned it.

    Let me be useful:

You have an iPhone 7. You get in your truck, phone connects, all of your settings made while that phone is connected will be present whenever that phone is connected.

Your wife's phone is linked with the system. She has an iPhone 6. When she gets in your truck and pairs her phone, all of her setting she made while her phone was paired are present.

My Audi had 2 keys. Each key would be set up for a driver (seat settings, radio presets, etc.,). I'm sure this is similar except it uses a phone to designate what driver is driving. This makes. Whole lot more sense than using keys.

I think it goes something like this:
Once you pair your phone, and you select this setting, things like audio level changes, display colors and such will automatically be saved and adjusted if the paired phone is detected once the vehicle is started.

To be fair, OP has clearly stated that he's stuck in the "80s for life", and the 80's didn't have bluetooth, thus the confusion.

If you set the display colors to blue while your phone is connected
Then your wife sets it to pink while her phone is connected
This option will recall those settings the next time each phone is paired.
apply the same logic to the other things like audio presets, languages, etc.

Has anyone tried starting the truck with two "known" bluetooth phones in reach? Say, a husband and wife pair? Do the phones fight it out for priority connection like a proper married couple, or is there a method to the madness?

Ok that helps. Well I'm the only driver, NO ONE else gets to drive my truck so I guess this feature is useless in my case. Thanks for clarifying. Haha yup I'm a 80s fanatic. My fav movies are the Back to the Future series.

So my conclusion when I looked it over and thought it did very little is correct.

In a smarter vehicle the car knows who is in the drivers seat by the key fob and will also adjust the seat, mirrors and what not to your preference.

I don't know if I'd call that smarter. Different, for sure. The downside is those vehicles require you to put the fob into a specific slot (like a key) before the vehicle can start. Otherwise you'll still run into the issue of two fobs being in the vehicle, and the vehicle not knowing which fob belongs to the current driver.

I really like being able to leave Tacoma's fob in my pocket - to me, that's a much better experience.

Not in my wife's 2013 Honda Accord, a four year old vehicle this month. The car knows who is in the seat when both fobs are in the car. The fob does not leave my pocket or my wife's purse. There are other things I would have liked to see in my 3rd gen that came in that car but all in all I still love my truck and plan to keep it another 10+ years.

Do you know how that works?

It might be proximity based, but that's 1) tough to do and 2) impossible to get perfect 100% of the time. If you sit in the passenger seat and your wife's purse is in your feet, or better yet, rear seats, how will the car determine that she's driving? It can't. Or if the two fobs are side by side in any location in the vehicle... same problem.

Will be interesting to see whether this gets solved effectively in the coming years.

Maybe it's based on the fob that opened the door...ie: the wifey...??

Dam I bought a dumb truck again.

If the two fobs are side by side not sure the vehicle should be moving, oh wait his wife's is in the pocket book, not her pocket.
