I was idling down a snow-covered hill in first gear 4wd coming to a T-intersection having no problems. I pushed in the clutch and hit the brakes to stop prior to turning right and the truck sped up while doing the "ABS is activating Shudder". I pulled the ABS fuse as soon as I got to work and now pull it anytime there is snow on the ground.
There have been threads on this before, so I won't beat a dead horse. I prefer the predictability of no-ABS versus not knowing what it is going to do with the ABS active.

I have the same problem. That's why I have a kill switch for the ABS. ABS is on 99% of the time, but when things get hairy I can turn it off. On the roads I drive there isn't much room to maneuver so I'd rather be able to lock the brakes up and stop than have the tire skipping slide me into a ravine, tree, or even just a deep ditch.

Have you actually tried this before saying that? With the ABS turned off I can push the pedal harder and stop sooner than with the ABS kicking in. I've tested it on the same stretch of road under the same conditions both with ABS off and ABS on within a few minutes. With the ABS off I could apply more braking force and not feel the tires lock up or slide. The ABS is either too sensitive, or doesn't respond fast enough. Every time it kicks in for me it causes more harm than good, and I've almost slid into traffic at intersections while slowing from 10mph or less. The effect is similar to skipping a flat stone across water. Before you say there's something wrong with my truck and I should take it to the dealer there are lots of people saying the same thing. So unless it's a wide spread issue not covered under a TSB or recall yet it's "normal" and the ABS sucks.

Oh and what does the insurance really matter on this? My 98 corolla did not have ABS, but the insurance company claimed it did. Do you think they'd charge me more if I got into an accident and they didn't find ABS when they inspected the car afterward?

The ABS is what actually caused me to rearend someone a few years back in my last 05. I was threshold breaking with traffic slowing down for some moron who decided to change into the 70MPH lane going 50 right in front of a train of cars. All was fine I was shedding speed with traffic about a car length from the focus in front of me. Then the ABS kicked in and it was like I lifted my foot right off the brakes and I just bumped him. In the snow it can be downright hairy. When I bought my 98 I waited a month for a well equipped V6 5 speed to come in without ABS. I wish that was still an option but with every automaker now afraid to get sued because people can't drive everything has ABS now. I need to wire up a cutoff switch for mine too.

No matter what these trucks have or don't have we all bought them at our own free will. My biggest complaint is the radio but I should have listened to it more before I bought it and checked into my options before I signed the papers.

C channel frame, wish there was more options than orange for the interior lights. Rugged fails should be replaced with BFG A/Ts on the Off Road package. Mud flaps that came on the truck are too long, long bed option for the Off Road. Leather option even though i hate leather.

This happened before I lifted truck. It was kind of the reason I started looking at other shock brands and started looking at lifts. I figured this happened on flat road while driving, how could I trust this brand (Bilstien) again. If I take a long trip and this happens while I'm driving, I'm done for. So, I wanted something I felt had more stability. So, Now I have the OME nitrocharged struts with OME 886 springs.

i don't have a 2nd generation but i do have a 2001 xtracab, and the thing i wics most that toyota would offer is a solid front end like back in the 80's. oh and one more thing. ya think after how many years of building these trucks, pre-tacoma included, they would figure out how to build a frmae that doesn't start to rust in less than 5 years and be rot in under 10.

    1) Discrepancy between dipstick and owners manual on how much oil to use..5q vs 6q

    2) Can't take off in 2nd gear

    3) Gas mileage for a 4 banger is ridiculous
