As much as I want to mess around with this thread I'm not going to.

The GX470 is nasty off road. I have a 470 & A 460, along with almost 1/2 my crew runs 470s. Full time 4wd, 2 speed manual transfer case with a shifter, center locking diff, full time Atrac 2 system oh and a 4.7 V8 with a long history of reliability. All stock on every single one. They run circles around anything thats not locked. Nothing from the same time period comes close with the same stock set up, only other Land Cruisers. Cons are the nav system is outdated due to its age and the A/C controls are integrated in the Nav system which makes installing a modern aftermarket radio very difficult. So the non nav 470s are more sought after. Also, timing belt needs to be changed every 90 thousand, people go way longer, the belt is thick and robust. Out of the dealer it ranges between $800, thats the homie price, up to $2,000 at the dealer. Mine was $1,500 at a trusted shop. The starter is under the intake manifold so thats a bitch of a job to replace the starter. Other more small stuff but you get the point.

Man you should see the look of embarrassment when a big lifted jeep, open diffs get circled by a Lexus soccer mom 470. Off roading in luxury, full leather, heated power seats, and almost all have a 3rd row seats with rear A/C system. Also, the 470 in low range there is no cut off, it will rev high. You should see these things flying in some soft sand.

Before anyone wants to argue, of course fully built vehicles with more ground clearance can handle more rocks. Dollar for dollar I don't think you could find a better built for off road stock vehicle than the 470. The best part is a lot of them were really used as soccer mom cars so they are not a beat as the more common used for off road 80 series or the 4R. One more positive for off roading the hood slopes straight down from the wind shield which is real nice in comparison to the Tacoma.

Their popularity has spiked over the past couple of years, but the prices have started to come down here over the last couple of months. It took me a while to find the color, interior, year and non nav I wanted but I got mine for under $10,000.

I'm sure you can tell I'm a fan, I would love to hear other options that folks here think actually come close.

I like the GX, and like many capable off road vehicles most GXs never go offroad or are driven in a situation where loss of traction would be a concern.

Finding one with out navigation would be nice.

I have zero evidence , but my moms impala wagon was an awesome off roader back in the 80's. Beast went everywhere. Probably because me and my brother didn't give a shit about it.

Tacomas are better off-road than any other midsize truck offerings but there are much better vehicles for off-road. 4Runners/GXs/jeeps are much better with their short wheelbase and better weight distribution.

Even short wheel base taco is too long for some obstacles, like washouts.

Same. So many good looking cars during that time. Too bad half of them are nearly the same cost as a new car.

Saw an Audi S8 on a trail where I know they had to have bottomed out and scraped the undercarriage. Thought about that thing when people say never buy used.
