I guess that's why he was in, and eventually went back, to sales.:yay:

Honestly, everyone that interacted with the guy had friction with him. The guy could be a real dick sometimes.

It seems like a waste of time to get your P.E. and just do sales, but there are a fair number of people who get their license and never stamp anything ever in the career. I've had my license for 8 years now and never have had to use it. But my career has been in microelectronics, you know, design of circuits, schematic capture, analysis, PCB layout. So it's not something that must be stamped by a P.E.

But it was something I wanted and the company required us to set annual goals during reviews. I set that as a performance target one year and they paid for the materials and gave me the day off to take the test. So it's mostly a maybe-someday thing just in case I need to stamp drawings for a house remodel or some other bullshit. From their perspective having an engineer with an additional qualification, P.E. license, advanced degrees, etc., allowed them to set a higher hourly charge rate for anything I worked on.

Construction Engineering. BS degree from Iowa State University. Took and passed my EIT exam but since I'm not a practicing engineer I've never taken my PE exam. I've been out of school over 20 years now; probably couldn't pass it now if I tried. When I go to hell I will have to do calculus problems for eternity. :frusty:

Bosch might be cool, they do lots of vehicle tuning too for abs and stability control.

I also have friends that worked at Cummins, they liked it but Columbus, Indiana is truly a terrible place to live from what ive heard.

I thought about getting my PE. I'd probably never use it either, but it was one goal that I had set for myself in college. However, I had since changed my mind and instead of studying 6-9 months to take an exam I'll never use, I'm going to head back to school and get an MBA or something that I would benefit from (wife and I will eventually own our own business, so it would help out).

I just passed the April 2016 PE exam. Haven't had the opportunity to use my stamp yet but I'm still young and have a long career ahead of me.

Totally understand the logic behind that. Doing a masters was years ago on my to-do list as a strong probably. It's like the undergrad engineering degree and P.E., once you have them you're good forever no matter what you end up doing for work. I actually applied and was accepted into the masters of engineering program at Colorado State about 2 years ago but ended up declining to enroll. At this point it's not going to help me that much with my career path and I just don't have the time and money to dedicate fully to it.

I got my B.S. in Aerospace Engineering in 2000, and worked for an FEA software company, where I found programming to be a passion that fulfills me more than engineering did. Right now I'm a Software Engineer for a Quantitative Finance software company.

Civil/Structural here with a BS in Maritime Systems Engineering. In a previous life, when oil wasn't in the shitter, I focused on offshore structures. Currently I am working in the heavy lift and transport industry.

Work for a nation wide general contractor. 20+ years. I grew up through the project management ranks and now focus on our in-house trade work like pouring concrete, carpentry, drywall, etc.

I do mechanical engineering but never get to actually do stuff with my hands. Write software to analyze fluid flows and write reports for things that'll get built some day. I wish I could do more work with my hands but I'm probably not as good at it as I like to think.

Wide range in the discipline of mechanical on what you get to do daily.

I got my IE degree 5 years ago now and was titled as an engineer for 3 years. I realized during that what I liked the most was going through data vs. proper engineering. 2 years ago I moved to HR to be in their analytical planning/forecasting group. We have 70k+ employees so our HR is segmented to specific tasks. I never would have thought I'd end up in HR, but it's still playing with numbers and you get to see a lot of confidential stuff which keeps me entertained.

It's hard to believe I've been in the oil & gas industry 26 years. I guess I'm old. Wouldn't do anything different. Ups, downs, layoffs... I'd do it again. This industry runs the economy. Hate us, love us, everything runs on energy. All those morons that think they understanding breaking rock a mile or two below the surface of the earth... Those that think we influenced the climate... Go gas up your Tacoma on cheap energy.

I'm praying for the oilfield to make a speedy recovery.
The area I live in is basically built on oil and it sucks to see so many people jobless.
Not to mention the college graduates like my self who are coming straight out of college to no jobs

And for those who believed their precious president when he said he lowered gas prices.... lol
