    Hey just saw this.

Main task is to work with operations to make sure they are operating within the confines of our permit and state and federal drinking water standards and regulations. I also do all the paperwork that goes with it. We had a pretty major violation (before my time) and the state mandated that our Utility staff a water quality division with engineers and a lab.

We also work with the construction/engineering bureau anytime they have a project impacting water quality or if something needs to be built to maintain our compliance our department gets involved.

We do a lot of data/plan review....

When I hear Environmental Engineer, I go right to compliance and permitting. Making sure construction or remediation is being conducted in accordance with rules and requirements set forth by the State and county. Also a big part is permitting sites through the State and Federal Departments. Some permits and required supporting documents require a professional who knows how to get them together and filled out properly to ensure approvals are done with minimal hold up.

I am do land development as a surveyor and engineer and while I do permitting in regards to wetland crossings, replications, and compliance within buffer zones, I have projects where clients are rebuilding seawalls along the coast line. I have a sub contractor who ONLY does permitting on waterfront projects and is considered an Enviro Engineer. Dealing with the Army Corps of Engineers and FEMA is a full time job that requires some very specific skill sets. He knows the local conservation commission boards and is the "go-to" guy in water front designs and permitting.

My degree is Computer Engineering, but I've worked my entire career in the IT industry, doing some small time coding, mostly to automate my own daily job functions. I spent my first 18 years as a hands on Systems Administrator, and the last several years as a production supervisor/critical situation specialist. Most people in the IT industry tend to have Computer Science degrees, but there are some with Engineering, or even non-tech related degrees.

Good fields to get into.....Some of the civil engineers I graduated with went to work for the big boys in petroleum (exxon/mobile and BP) and they are doing very well for themselves.

Title is mechanical engineer, mainly machinery design for manufacturing. Love my job. Started as a part-time assembler in college, then went to machinist for a while, then they hired me after I got my degree. And I heard it was gonna be hard to get a job!

    This is a great thread!

As a Sophomore headed in to my Junior year studying a Mechanical Engineering Technology degree, I'm curious how long it took many of you well qualified individuals to get your degree. I'm looking at 5 years in total where I sit now. That could go go up or down by about one semester but I wont know until I get closer to graduation.

My biggest issue as a student is I have the work ethic of a laborer not a student. I can work 60+ hour weeks but I struggle to stay motivated in my studies.

Be very careful with a MET degree. It can be considerably harder to get a job than an ME degree and there are some very large companies that will hire you as a designer and not an engineer.
