That's quite the change. Did you find an opening, or did you go back to school? Just curious how you entered the field.

Mechanical Engineering degree. I plan/oversee the maintenance of open pit mining equipment.

One whole wall of my office is windows. But the blinds stay closed during daylight hours so I can see my computer monitors.

I've been a mechanic, industrial electrician, instrumentation technician... The list goes on but I currently work in the electrical engineering department of a manufacturing company where my main focus is designing controls and writing programs that control automated equipment.

Went to school, kind of late, for geomatics engineering (basically land surveying +). I've worked land survey, offshore construction survey, project management and now I manage project managers with engineering degrees.

I have worked hard and been very fortunate. So, despite nearly everyone I work with assuming I am, I am still not any kind of engineer....so I selected nothing for the poll. :)

The poll seems to be missing marine engineering, so I voted mechanical due to the similarities.

Retired. Old school industrial Engineering. Slide rules, stopwatches. Plant Layout, Methods, Time and Motion. Sworn enemy of Unionism. Enjoyed hands on R&D in Aerospace in later career, hated Unions even more. Damn fucking Unions destroyed the American work ethic.

And the Unions hated time and motion men...how many therbligs is that again?

I get to play with many things that go into space, usually powered by big rockets.

I voted computer, but that's a little bit of a misnomer.

As that encompasses HVAC work, electrical circuitry and wiring, cabling & low voltage pipes, pneumatics & hydraulics at the high end, electrical appliances, cabinetry and furniture work, cleaning, humidity controls, etc etc etc

So...all that, but without the fuss of a degree. Just 2 decades of "Hey IT guy, make this work"

    Not sure that's a poll-able entry?

I worked for two unions and interned at two more.

And I'll never work at another one ever again, unless prostituion is the only other option....which means I'll be breaking and entering to eat.

I was a MEP designer for 6 years before going back to school for my B.S.
Did a lot of design for institutional and research buildings. BSL 3 labs and hospital design were fun.

I fully agree. My company is non Union, but incisor a lot of plants to commission flares and most are Union. Definitely not much work ethic as a whole. There are many hard working people, but overall the sites lack drive.
