So . . . actually my question was a little more basic than all of this (although I do appreciate the effort). I really just wanted to know what does switching from H2 to H4 actually do. Does it just engage the transfer case or more than that? What I am hearing is that on the Tacoma you've got two open differentials and a transfer case. So all H4 does is engage the transfer case to send power to the front, right?

It engages the chain drive in the transfer case (which sends power to the front driveshaft) and also engages the automatic differential disconnect (ADD) which allows the front driveshaft to send power to the wheels.

42 years of driving 4wds....17 different trucks, 5 Toyota's, 4 of them Tacoma's. Probably 20,000 miles of off road driving over the years.

It's all been a waste of time and money.

This thread has enlightened me as to the error of my ways.

    It's all an illusion........

Everything is already turning in the drive train, when the knob turns, the hub's engage and now front wheels have power. That's all, no engaging chains, gears, just the hub's in the front axles.

Wrong. Nothing moves in the hubs. There is a axle disconnect on the passenger side of the front diff. And there is a chain that drives the front output of the transfer case. Everything is not already moving

do any of you guys know if there's any kind of limited-slip in the transfer case? or if it's open? Meaning that the Front and Rear axels are NOT at a fixed power ratio? I know on wranglers they're fixed at 50%/50%, so you can't drive in 4H too much because it'll strain the transfer case when it wants to put more power to the front or rear axel depending where the strain is.

Just wanted to clear up wether our Tacomas have that same 50/50 fixed split, or if they can shift power front-to-back, making it ok to drive in 4H long distances.

And is it the same 4WD system in all the Tacoma trims, despite that some trims come with the locking rear diff?

There's no diff in the transfer case frontfront output and rear output are locked together. Also all trim levels are the same other than trd Offroad and trd pro have rear diff lock and atrac.
