What exactly would OV tune do for me?

    Good evening all.

I purchased a 2018 off road in March and have enjoyed the truck for the most part. I had the update performed at 5000 miles and enjoy driving the truck back and forth to work. I have been experiencing a bit or remorse lately. I simply despise the performance on the highway. Granted nearly 90% of my driving is not on the highway, but when I take the truck on longer trips I grow frustrated with the inability to hold momentum and frequent shifting.

The truck is stock and I run 87 octane fuel. Would the tune do anything to improve the performance on the highway?

Thanks for the input in advance.

Just curious if you tried a search. There’s countless threads on OV Tune. I honestly don’t think anyone has complained about it’s performance. If anything the price. But he is the only one to break the Toyota coding so he has to eat too! Actually right at the top there’s a thread ov tune review. Give it a read

I wish I had a way to take the tune on a road trip before buying the product. 800 bucks is a lot to spend when you don't really know if it will solve your particular problems.

Check the Ovtune thread and ask a few members who have it to get their opinions. Im doing it at 5000miles personally just for the drivability .

You can run Windows on a Mac, just have to download the right driver and program that you need. Lots of info online on how to do this.

If you are looking to fix the constant shifting at high speeds, ovtune is not the answer. I have ovtune and in my opinion it hunts for gears just as much as stock.

1.05 may change some things. If I were you I'd wait until 1.05 and see what people say before pulling the trigger.

I'd like to add I'm using 1.04 87 tune. The 91 tune may give you different results.

Regearing is an actual solution to the inability to keep momentum and gear shifting. Or buying a manual variant

    Yeah, no.
Ovtune does not hunt for gears as much as stock. I'm using the same tune as that guy, I had stock for 20k miles, and OVtune 12k miles and every iteration has been an improvement over stock. My trucks stock + a bedrack and I get 22.5mpg. 400miles/tank commuting to work and back. I would be lucky to get 300 before the tune.

You want to know what OVtune will do for you? It will make you love your truck again. Read the OVTune reviews thread and look at the polls. Probably close to 85% of people who got it see an improvement.

I think the people who see the least improvement are those who are lifted with bigger tires. They seem to prefer version 1.03 over 1.04.

I flashed it to a family friends Tacoma. He was gonna trade his in at a loss for a manual, when I flashed it he loved it again.

If you can find someone in your area who has the flashing tools you can buy a license for only 325ish? Most guys are willing to help.

Otherwise, you can try to convince your dealer to try to flash your ecu with TSB 0062-18. Alot of guys have said that if their truck came stock with that revised time they probably would have been very happy. Problem being most dealers are not flashing that TSB as your truck has to meet the symptom requirements. You can pirate a version of techstream but you need the tools to connect a laptop to your truck. Those tools are half the cost of the ovtune.

Let's just say ovtune was the best money I've spent on my truck to date.

I should add that my lease is up in December and I'm undecided if I'm going to buy the truck or not if I do I have a set of 4:30 gears I'm going to install. I'm really interested to see how the truck responds stock with those gears

If you're getting 22.5mpg I'm guessing you're going 60-70mph and/or driving on relatively flat roads. I'll admit at speeds under 65mph I do notice an improvement with ovtune.

At interstate speeds, 75-80mph, and especially on hilly roads I feel it shifts just as much as stock.

Also I forgot to mention, my experience is mostly running with cruise control. Your experience may differ if you drive manually and let the speed dip a bit on inclines.

Yup You're absolutely correct. 55-60mph on my commute mostly. I Grandpa drive it. Which was actually not possible for me when it was stock. The truck would lose too much speed always shifting into 6th, then would have to make up ground by shifting to 4th or 5th.

And you're right again about cruise control, which I forgot about entirely because I don't use it, because it's terrible. That definitely has not changed from stock to tuned lol.

Interstate speeds I have never been able to attain stated highway fuel economy. Stock or tuned. I think it's an aerodynamics vs torque thing. The shift tables will not allow for more ignition at those speeds in 6th gear, they just wait till the throttle reaches the threshold to downshift. Which is that inch or so of pedal play you can get at those speed where the engine just does nothing, no acceleration or downshift. Then you push the pedal past the throttle tables limits and it downshifts.

Shitty fucking design. Apparently this has been addressed in v1.05 of the tune, but since it hasn't been released its all speculation.

I had tsb 62-18 done at 5k and noticed a slight difference in drivability. My driving is done in north central Ohio and the topography is relatively flat with rolling hills. I am conflicted. I do not want to spend a pile of money on the truck only to trade it.

Sounds like the best bet is to wait for reviews on the next version of OV tune.
