You really won't get a beefy tone from the 3.5L you're going to want to step up to a V8. This truck sounds like a pop can exhaust with all of the aftermarket exhaust sound samples I've heard.

Having a Magnaflow 3" exhaust and URD y-pipe welded on next week, and was thinking about maybe getting a 3" resonator as well, to keep it from sounding like a ricer, but don't want to quite it to much to not hear a nice rumble at idle.

    Thoughts?

Best and cheapest cat back system I ever had was from the Cat to a Y pipe , to 2 rear pipes with no mufflers and out the rear. 1978 Pontiac Formula 400 4 spd Super T 10 . It sounds great when wanted an low V8 rumble at idle an slow driving . All aluminized , done in 1984 and still in use today . I wish they could make a V6 sound like it .

Dammit TacomaWorld, you let me down...

Had to fish or cut bait on the resonator in order to make the Prime delivery deadline, and get here in time to be installed with other parts. Figure I might as well give it a try, I know it will quite it down, and that's ok... I'm not in high school any more.
Just didn't want to drop all that coin on the other parts, add a resonator, and have it sound like my stock exhaust (which I'm sure it wont). Just don't have any experience with V6's (x's?)... usually I'm cutting off the resonators on my V8's to get the deep done I want.

You cut me deep TW... in el corazon. :p

Borla. Deep tone and no drone. Look in the Performance forum. Looking for what not to buy? Look in the buy/sell/trade - many noise makers being dumped.

    Question:
If I wanted to replace the exhaust flange and gasket where the URD y-pipe will connect to the new 3" diameter down pipe, would this be the correct flange to get?
    http://vibrantperformance.com/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=1527_1532_1122_1153&products_id=144

I know I could just use the stock exhaust flange on the down pipe side and have the shop weld a 3" pipe to it. But since everything else is being replaced from the ypipe back, thought I'd look for a new flange as well. Also, nice that the above linked one is stainless steel.

So, the URD y-pipe diameter is 2.25" (assuming the hole diameter at its flange is the same), could I just bolt up the above linked flange to the down pipe side, weld a 3" piece of pipe on it and be good to go? I think the stock down pipe going to the muffler is what, 2.5"?

Also, if this flange would work (i.e. is the same outside diameter size as the URD ypipe flange) could I just use this gasket?
    http://vibrantperformance.com/catalog/product_info.php?products_id=128

Instead of the standard type of donut gasket that is between the stock flanges now?

Am I on the right track? Am I totally of base? Tried searching for any info. about the stock flanges and gaskets for our Tacomas... there is little to no info. available.

I listened to a soundclip of Borla on a 3.5 Tacoma and could not believe how awful it sounded, I think it just sounded like noise, not impressed at all.

Just installed flowmaster super 44 and love it. As long as you dont push 3-4k rpm it doesnt sound like a ricer. The truck likes to run at lower rpm which we all hate bc lack of torque but it helps making it sound deeper and timed almost like a v8. There is no replacement for displacement but honestly the best sound I think you can get from a 3.5L. I came from a 2014 GT mustang with a long tubes headers, high flow cats and flowmaster muffles so I've been spoiled but I'm pleased with the super 44's. Also can't beat $86 on Amazon and $60 to cut and weld in the new muffler. Will be chopping the exhaust after the axle to fit my full spare under the bed after chopping the last exhaust support off.
