We tried this on a surf fishing trip last fall. We didn't do the electrical math and we're disappointed at 6AM on the beach when we tried to make breakfast sandwiches.

I was recently given a unused butane grill but have never used one. I was planning on using a trusty old Cast Iron skillet and maybe and old non stick pan.

I have yet to camp out the truck but I think I'll be making my first trips this fall.

    Great ideas in this thread!

Yeah I could see that being no-bueno. Anything that has a heating element in it draws pretty substantial current. 1000-1200watts is a realistic range for the inverter you'd need. I'm betting I could hide one in the truck somewhere and then reconfigure the receptacle in the bed to run at full load. I don't think it would be that hard. 1200 watts would be 100A at 12V. With the 130A alternator that comes with the towing package it would be find I'd think. An inverter of that power level is going to be the size of an amplifer though so I don't think I can get that under the center console where the stock one is!

It's funny, when not camping breakfast is my favorite meal. Finishing eggs, bacon and a Belgium waffle as I type this in fact!

But my "camping" is usually more like "exploring" and I usually move camp every day. Also I'm usually in a desert and so cooler early hours are at a premium for hiking. All that means I want to get moving pretty quick and so a fast cold breakfast is preferred.

Compared to when I was a kid we always camped in one spot for a whole week. In that situation a nice big hot breakfast was just the thing. We were practically trying to kill time anyway and a nice meal is a great way to do that with family.

The one place I stay camped for a whole week is Saline Valley in December. Those breakfasts are hot - but not the food, just me. Wake up around 4 am and pack some cold breakfast items before climbing into a hot spring tub. After about three hours of soaking the sun starts rising and I have my breakfast in the tub. Burro might drift by for a drink from the tub. Sometimes a coyote joins me for breakfast if he's caught one of the local waterfowl.

Anyway love seeing everyone's ideas for various meals here. Which meal is a big deal kind of depends on what your "camping" entails.

When I'm hiking/camping yes. But with the fam or friends I wake up pretty wasted and that hot meal hits the spot better than hot meal at night. But I agree on the go, cold is better day or night. If I catch a fish is when I get a hot meal on a hike.

My issues is, most mornings Every one is looking for the "cook" and I didn't go to bed but a few hours before everyone else is getting up. Dam fire will not burn all the wood I put on, no matter how much alcohol I consume while waiting.

Edit: fixed the spelling mistakes, looked like I had been drinking all day before I posted.

We love to cook haddock or salmon wrapped in tinfoil covered with horseradish sauce and cracker crumbs. Wrap that goodness up, cook by the fire a bit and eat like a king or at least a bear.

Haha. I tend to eat better while camping. Maybe I don't go camping enough and it's a big deal when I do.

I have a lot of friends like that also. If camping might was well be eating good!! But I run up randomly a lot with just me and wife so we grab what we can at the house.

Good breakfast idea for those who want easy cleanup:

Premix eggs with whatever you would put in your omelet like shredded cheese, mushrooms, peppers etc.

Pour individual sized portions into heavy duty ziplock freezer bags and pack in your cooler.

In the morning, submerge the bags in a pot of boiling water but leave the top ziplock part sticking out of the water (being careful not to let them flop over the edge of the pot where the heat might melt them)

In 12-15 minutes, you just pull the bags out, let cool for a minute and the omelettes Come right out and onto your plate perfectly formed.

    * EDIT: 1gallon size *

On hunting/camping trips, breakfast is a high calorie protein bar and a couple of cups of instant coffee.
Doesn't take up a lot of space and it's quick so you get out in the woods faster.

    Great idea.

So keep the zip part of bag out because water might get in?

And use the freezer type because they're thicker, less likely to puncture?

I wonder if theres a way to accomplish this without the throw away plastic bags. we've been trying to limit our garbage too lately. are there any metal containers that have a screw lid that wouldn't spill all over the cooler?

Keeping the top out of water keeps it from getting so hot and makes it easy to grab and pull out.

And use freezer type, yes or no or doesn't matter? Seems safest if yes because they're a bit thicker.

    Right,
I've used regular ziplock bags and they held up ok, but after the boil, they felt like they were on the verge of failure.

    Note: 1 gallon size

Thanks. Good tip on the 1 gallon also. Hell, I might even do this at home! Good way to use up a lot of fresh eggs, drowning in them at the moment.
