I'm agreeing to disagree. You don't pay for friends you earn them by rushing the fraternities/sororities, getting a bid, pledging and becoming friends with everyone, then pay dues to continue being a member and help pay for house upkeep, events, etc.

ah ok. . .yeah i mean i get the concept of it. but knowing some of the guys and all the bull shit they had to do to get in to some of them (getting beat with a paddle, are you fucking joking?), ive just never seen the point in them. the dues are outrageous too IMO.

It's just one of those things that you have to do to understand I guess. Hazing isn't as bad as it used to be but they still do some gross stuff to the pledges. Next year I'm going to rush, and hopefully get bidded into Pi Kappa Phi and be an official member. Paddling doesn't happen anymore, or shouldn't, most just have the paddles because it becomes a symbol of the fraternity.

All Greek I know have a "No Hazing" policy but where is the fun in that? Not to mention how easy it would be to get in, now I know where everyone is coming from with the no hazing policies but still it needs to be challenging to get in. Most "Hazing" that takes place today is just basically being a servant of the house/brothers for a semester and do what they tell you to.

TKE! I had a great time and most of my best friends are a result of the fraternity (graduated 7 years ago).

Almost??? Its illegal in most states with a very heavy penalty

Not true. Pledge semester (at least for me) was about learning the history of the house/fraternity. And getting used to college and studies. Yea we had to clean. But so did the members. Mom isn't there to pick up after you in college.

Completely agree with this. I spend more time and are closer to my friends from college both fraternity and other Greeks then I am with high school friends

Not sure how it I in LA but that's how I rember frats in Florida. And to making more $ by joining a frat. I have never been asked what frat I belonged to in a interview. I'm sure if you stay local you make good connections but I could not wait to get out of Florida. And I now work in the oil industry so $ is not bad to say the least...
I am sure fraternities work out great for quite a few people but they weren't for me. But to each their own.

Edit: before I come of sounding like a jerk I should clarify I went to UNF not UF or Florida State so the Greek population was not huge. Also as far as pay goes i have always negotiated my pay at the time based on industry average. Who knows if I was interviewing with a frat brother maybe negotiations would have been better?

very true, no doubt about that!

but when i said frowned upon, i meant it in a perspective from guys that are already in a fraternity and some fraternities still do it under the table!!!

Most fraternities are realizing it will not be tolerated by freshman rushing these days and will eventually be stopped completely.

My chapter is a baby compared to other chapters on my campus and we were one of the first to actually rush guys saying that we have no hazing 100%

My house has been on campus for over a hundred years. We were the first recognized fraternity on campus. We have a 100% zero tolerance for hazing. This has been a battle over the years against members who come back who were here during the "glory" days of the 70's and 80's.

Personally, most people who talk shit about "paying for friends" don't know what they are talking about.

thats awesome. i really think this sort of accepted no hazing has comer easily for the northern universities and it still lingers throughout the south.

and yea a lot of people have no clue what they are missing out on. it make college that much more of a learning experience IF you do it right and dont abuse it.
