Joined the military instead of going to college, and always thought the idea of frats kinda... meh...

Always wondered why they call themselves "Greek" though... I am willing to put a paycheck on 99.9% of frat members not having Greek lineage, and being in a club that uses the Greek alphabet for its names / symbology most certainly does not make a person "Greek"..

We don't consider ourselves "greek" as being originated from the country of Greece. There is a lot more to it, each house has it's own history. Founders developed each houses' meanings, secrets, and ways based on Greek (and sometimes Roman) mythology and language. And don't judge a book by it's cover. My house (SAE) is all about being a True Gentleman. I don't know a lot about other houses, but the majority of them represent the same basic ideas. There are a LOT of guys out there that give "frat" a super bad image. If a fraternity man follows his house's rules, image, and motto, he will be a gentleman, a scholar, and a successful man who lives his life well. Obviously, not all follow these ways, and many (especially in the south), do it just for the image, which is very sad. www.totalfratmove.com shows the majority of the knuckleheads I am talking about.

I actually have a jeep now. Imagine that.
When fraternities started, greek was still taught in schools. Fraternities used greek letters for identification because it represented an organization founded by a group of educated individuals (in other words, Greek taught in college, college groups used greek letters to identify this fact)

Just to clarify what everyone here is saying about "paying for friends", you're not. You're paying to do some of the sickest shit with the friends that you have made. Dues go to buying us camping gear, buses for exchanges with sororities, buses for formals, venues for both, and etc. Nobody in a fraternity is paying for friends, that's an obvious turn away to anyone.
The Greek system is full of people who are the best at making friends anyways, not ones who need to pay for popularity. That's basically what rushing is all about, sprouting friendships.Oh, its free to rush btw.

    That being said, RUSH BETA!
