On 2.7 L they had to go with a bigger differential to compensate for lack of power. On 4.0L they had to have lower RPM on the highway to get better fuel consumption.

They could go faster if you remove the limiter .

Naw George, nothing to do with 4.0 vs 2.7, no doubt the more powerful 4.0 eng can pull a taller gear than the little weak 2.7. It's the 2.7 auto. vs the 2.7 5 spd manual, both come from Toyota with a 4.10 gear, but the gear ratios of the 2 transmissions are quite different. The 2.7 "auto.", unless I'm missing something, would need a 4.88 rear gear to be equal to the 2.7 manual W/ the orig. 4.10 rear gear. The 2.7 auto. runs appx. 1800 rpm @ 60 mph. The 2.7 manual runs appx. 2250 rpm @ 60 mph. If Toyota had used a 4.88 gear in the 2.7 W/ auto. trans. (according to West Coast Differential gear ratio calculator) then the 2.7 auto would then be running 2222 @ 60 mph., almost exactly what the 2.7 manual runs with the orig. 4.10. Why in heck did Toyota think the 2.7 manuals needed to run up at 2250 rpm. @ 60 mph., to be comfortable, but the 2.7 auto would be good running 1800 rpm @ 60mph. It just don't make sense!!!

This my 2013 4.0L with stock 3.73 on 33's tires. My actual speed on GPS in 64 mph. I think on 31 inches should be the same RPM.

Thank you George. I'm loving the idea of 64 mph @ 1,900 - 2,000 RPM. I'll have ample time to compare the stock tires vs my 33s as I'll have to drive it back from Michigan to Minnesota around an 8 hr trip. Once home I can put on the 33s and see how it differs in both hyway and off road use.

Once you put bigger tires your car will be slower and fuel mileage drops.

I thought you stated the photo was taken with stock gearing and on 33s already, right? I have no plans to go larger than 33s.

Yes, stock gears 3.73 with 33's. But stock tires are 31inch tire. 33 inch are oversize.

Do you have an AT? I have an 05 manual and at 75mph I'm at about 3k RPM. I hate it

I have a 4 banger with 295/70/17s and 5.29s. It’s a little overgeared, but I was planning on 35s at the time. Now that I’m sticking with 33s-34s I’d get 4.88s if I was to do it over again. I had 4.88s with the same size tires before going to 5.29s and it was perfect
