Oh yeah this is just another fun way for them to try and make more money. This part of the deal always pisses me off because they purposely consume your time and speak to everything even if you say you’re not interested before they run their mouth. I've gotten so pissed with this crap and hate when I’m sent to the finance guy.

The whole numbers thing with the sales person drives me crazy too. You tell them what you want to pay and how much you plan to put down and they always come back way off with a stupid smiley face as if they actually came close. I always draw a big fat sad face underneath and put "cut the crap" and have them send it back to the manager. They usually don't like me very much for doing this, but I could care less. Not there to make friends, just to buy a car/truck

I literally hate the buying process and hate working with these idiots, its always just a complete waste of my time for me. Having said that I understand the game and why they do it.

Seeing lots of low OTD #'s. I'm using USAA also and they sent me the below quote but the OTD doesn't seem as low as some. How much is title and license usually (California)?

My OTD is $32,827.26 but don't know why ttl is so much.

Most dealerships do not consider you a serious buyer if you are spending your time calling around.
Visit the dealership with your check book in hand and then get serious.

Some of the common mistake people make when buying a new vehicle are:

Excited they were offered more than their payoff for their trade. Big deal, what you owe on it and what it is worth are two different issues all together.

You have to compare apples to apples. It does not matter what customer "A" paid for his truck unless you are comparing the exact same truck with the same options and same sales tax and DMV fee's.

You want a serious price if you have a trade, visit the dealership and be prepared to write a check for the deposit, otherwise they just view you as a tire kicker.

Finally, dont get confused about payments. Just because you are buying new and your payments are not going up doesnt mean shit. Terms may be longer and at a lower rate. It still might mean you over paid. Walk into a dealership and say you want to buy as long as your payments don't go up and you might as well bend over and ask them to fuck you.

skycam3 - was 33k after tax, title, license? If so that's a smokin deal. I think I'm getting thrown off by this whole OTD thing, some refer to that others don't. How much was your title and license?

68whiskey- I've been shopping for a 2012 in SD and know exactly what you're talking about. Run the USAA quote again and at some point when you print out the certified price you'll be provided salesman names and contact info. Only go through them, the other salesman will just cost you wasted time and empty promises. There is only one or two USAA rep at any given dealership.
