    HI All,

Since my truck only has apple car play, I am looking into getting a GPS to use when I dont have cell service! Any input on devices to get? I was looking at a the Garmin Overlander - it is a little pricey, but I like the idea of having the iOverlander POI's pre-installed.

    Any thoughts?

Realistically how often do you plan on being in areas without cell service? IMO a GPS isn’t worth it if you’re not going to be out every week in areas where you have no service. Or if you’re an extreme overlander

Im out in places with no cell service quite often when I go camping, fishing, and road trips. So basically every weekend until snow season comes around, and then who knows, maybe ill hit up some way out there snow offroading. Examples are places in Tahoe, Mammoth, Humboldt county and where ever else I want to try to get lost in!

Gaia and your car play will do exactly as you're asking. Offline maps, downloadable offline maps. All synced to CarPlay. This is what makes the 2020 so nice. No extra devices needed! Minimal.

I use a Garmin 276cx on my snowmobile. It's awesome. I don't wheel but it would do whatever on earth you'd ever want a GPS to do.

Gaia works on the 2020 Tacoma display through Apple Carplay, but not Android Auto (currently).

    +1 for GaiaGPS

I have the Garmin Nuvi 55LM and it is really useful. Small enough not to take up the entire console. As good as it is, I still bump my iPhone maps against it whenever possible to make sure everything checks out.

I also vote GAIA. I used to use it all the time in Search and Rescue, and then when I worked wildland fire. Downloading maps ahead of time is really easy. You can make your own routes in the app, or if you are savvy with ArcMap of QGIS you can export your own shapefiles and open them in GAIA as well.

Gazetteer for paper maps is also a great idea. Keep that behind the seat.
