There's a difference between a manufacturer recommending 87, vs saying you CAN run 87, but suggests 91+

On some cars, going above 87 will give you absolutely nothing, whereas on others like ours, it does make a difference. I only run premium.

Been running 87 forever, every now and then I may run a tank with an additive through it

I fill lowest grade unless it calls for premium. My taco isn't a high comp race car so no need for premium. No problems after 180k.

Now my other cars with 10:1+ i use premium for sure

I actually got better MPG running the lower octane than 93 premium. I was shocked.

Higher octane requires more spark to ignite, we don't have specialized engines which require/accept higher octane so there are no benefits of using it. I've done a lot of gas research lately, on many sites and that is the consensus. If you want to do something good for your motor www.pure-gas.org fill up with pure gas(most is ethanol blend of some level) and see if that helps your fuel economy/how your motor runs. Remember that driving technique and conditions are also very important relevant factors(flooring it, hauling/weight, temp, weather, amount of time sitting still in traffic)and one tank is not enough for statistically relevant data so run a few tanks of pure then compare it to a few tanks of something else(all the same grade). I'm in the process of running only from a pure gas station and so far I am very happy with the results( 3 weeks).

87 because I experienced no benefit after 6 months of premium. 140,000 miles and the only thing that changed my MPG was switching from the stock Dueler 265/70/16 to really crappy Firestone Destination LE 265/75/16. Went from 300 per tank to 260 if I'm lucky. Oh...and these are supposedly highway tires. Will never buy them again.
