Possibly. But that cruise should have been off approaching an exit ramp. If he were a responsible driver.

In my area whenever a good snow hits, people demonstrate their brain disconnect. Many times witness to driver in front fishtail with the drive wheels spinning like crazy. They usually lift off that skinny pedal when they face opposite the traffic. Somehow that turns on the brain/body connection.

Shitty driver and/or bad tires. I take an off ramp like that all the time and not once have I spun out in any RWD vehicle that I've owned.

It rains a lot in Hawaii so I don't think the first rain thing is plausible and I doubt the truck was in CC, who has CC engaged when you're on an exit ramp? I see a driver accelerating on a wet road, the rear end fish tails a bit, the driver over corrects, the rear end hooks back up and the truck goes where the front wheels tell it to go.

Took turn too fast. Over corrected.
No hydroplaning because there wasn't enough water.
This is not hydroplaning, so we need to stop calling it hydroplaning.

I'm sure that's what he'll tell his insurance company, though.

this happened to me in thick traffic on I-35 in the rain at 75mph last Wednesday, and i got fully sideways with the truck skipping on 2 wheels. i wasn't even driving crazy. just a wrong moment and i hydroplaned. the gods watched over and i regained control, and all the drivers around me were smart and quickly faded back, no contact, nobody hurt.

new tires were ordered the next day and installed on Saturday.

It boils down to just insuring to drive safely for whatever conditions you're in regardless whether you are driving a Tacoma or any other vehicle.

looks like he was going too fast around that turn and over corrected and completely lost it. looked like nothing more than driver error.

It doesn't appear too fast too me, Whoever was videoing was driving at the same speed and didn't have issues. It looks like either worn/bad tires or oil on pavement to me. I'm betting bad tires. Tire manufacturers have choices. Soft rubber grips roads better than hard rubber, but wear out sooner. Harder rubber lasts longer, but doesn't grip roads as well. Especially wet roads. I've owned tires in the past that would do things like that if you weren't extremely careful even with plenty of tread on them. The driver started with a minor skid and over corrected. A good driver would have kept it on the road.

And to the OP, those are NOT conditions where you need to be operating in 4X4. That's not what it's designed for.

Looks like tires were the cause and maybe speed?

All the electronic nannies in the world can't overcome the laws of physics. Speed, reduced friction + inertia = mayhem. Throw in shitty tires, over correction and possible throttle application and you have this

    in my armchair opinion

VSC could have recovered that , if it had VSC and good tires. but hard to tell critical speed/grip ratio without all specifics (surface/temp/grease/tires/temp...all factors)

VSC has straightened my arse out on the highway when I snowplaned (rode up on 2 inches of slush) but I was also more straight and good tires, not on as tight a corner

I don't believe this is a case of "Over Correcting". (In my 10 years of racing exp opinion)

it is definitely Lack of skill (and unsafe/bad judgement). This is a constant variable in the motorcycle racing world (search "highsiding" on youtube)

The entrances G-force casued the rear to step out - Driver did not react quick enough to the situation and only way to save it that far was to modulate the throttle to correct (IMO)

Once truck was as sideways as it was, letting off the gas (completely) let the truck regain traction and the force of that over aligns the wheels again causing the spin.

Was moving pretty fast for any vehicle on wet pavement. I would also bet his tires worn as f%$%. People in warm climates drive tires until they bald.

There’s actually better traction when the steel belts start showing.
