Watching the video the person definitely overcorrected once it started to slide. I’m a pretty experienced driver…can drift cars (on wet roads), race motorcycles, etc. and I was driving my Tacoma TRD off road model (only 8,000 miles) and noticed it seemed to be hydroplaning easily. I could feel the steering wheel getting too light…meanwhile people were passing me left and right so I was not driving too fast. Was searching the internet to see if others commented on the same experience or was I being paranoid. I think I’m pretty good at detecting when a vehicle is starting to hydroplane. And I’ve had lots of other pickups that weren’t like that so it’s not the empty bed rear while drive thing. A Ram blew by me on this day.

Always a good reason to throw it in 4hi every once in awhile.

It’s because there’s no weight in the back of the truck. I put a camper shell on my Taco and it does better in corners. Nothing like my Subaru, obviously, but it’s more planted.

Let’s add to the list of guesses that the person could be a GoofBall trying to catch up with the truck in the right lane on a slick curve.

Driver error, did not know how to counter steer instead of over correcting. I could have saved that vehicle blindfolded.

Weight of course helps but I’ve had small trucks, mid size trucks and large trucks and they all had empty beds. They did not hydroplane easily. On this particular evening a Ram blew by me and a little hatchback something (i.e. light) did too. I’m thinking the stock off road centric tires must not be good in rain at freeway speeds.

rotated tires changed oil threw out the old air freshener.
    classic oversteer.

Best tires go in the back!

But I set up my RX-7 for a bit of over steer, 'cause I like "Tail Happiness" ;-)

Not so much with the truck, I would prefer to just mush along into the verge.....

Last night I had someone aggressively tailgating me on a ramp with a long, tight bend onto the highway. The road surface was completely frozen, my Impreza with good winter tires was losing grip.

I live in a place with extreme weather, so many people are oblivious to the conditions and only care about getting places fast.

Yeah, it seems like folks are more interested in their eta than safety. While driving at reduced speed I was passed by a group of cars on a Wyoming hwy in icy conditions and not to my surprise I then passed them after they had slid off the roadway with one overturned.

Very simple what happened here. She realized she left the eggs sitting in the shopping cart in the parking lot and decided to go back and get them. The shortest way was to make a U turn where she did. makes total sense.

I think the setup might have been initial understeer, more steering input, tires got traction went to oversteer, overcorrected with help from panic braking.

Snopes already debunked this video. The driver staged the accident to write off his 2nd Gen so he could get into a sweet 3rd Gen. if you look closely he is wearing a helmet.

Sums up the quality of this thread. How this shit even makes it to the 3rd gen section is beyond me... but then again, I've been in some forums where mods are nazi's so it's kinda nice to get "news" here. I dunno where the hell else I would get it from...

I think half the noobs are mod accounts so they can sneak in and pour gas in the 3rd gen dumpster.

happened to me once with a small pu, wet road, going down an onramp to the freeway kinda fast. Felt rear sliding out, let off the gas pedal and it stopped sliding, put the foot on the brake pedal to slow down and it started to slide again, let loose the foot pedal and she straightened out again, by this time I was nearly out of the turn and unto a straightaway to the freeway. Luckily there was no vehicle in front of me! because if there were there was no way I could have avoided an accident. I lucked out in a sense and learned a lesson well.

I was thinking oil or gas slick on a wet surface but remembered at a stand still on an uphill with wet road if I were to gas it at the start of going forward my tires would break the surface easily. Tires had a lot of meat so I started to think it was hard rubber like Michelins(?) but heard many say truck rear with no load theres no traction too. lol

Today I slid while gassing up a slightly icy incline going 45 in 2wd. I easily corrected but was in the middle of the road for a split second, which rattled me a bit.

As a first time truck owner coming from a Subaru living in MT all my life and very experienced in winter driving conditions, maybe I could use this thread to ask a few questions.
    1. My bed is empty and want to add some weight, is there a recommendation on # or just throw in a few sandbags?
    2. Running 32 psi in all 4 of my new ko2 s, should I be running lower in the rear or in all 4 in the winter?
    3. Aside from this and slower driving, using 4wd, going back to a Subaru, is there anything else to help mitigate this I’m not thinking of?

Those tires would not be my first choice for ice. I say this as an owner of KO2s. Matter of fact, I recently busted mine loose on some slick/wet road; no rain. Although, this was after a recent tire rotation so I have slightly less tread in the rear. It is the last rotation as they are 6 years old, getting near their tread life and are hardening. For ice, short of a dedicated winter tire, I'd recommend a P or euro metric tire with more siping, softer compound and 3PMSF rating. Something like a Cooper AT34S, Toyo AT3, Falken Wildpeak, Nokian Rotiiva, etc.

But, like you said, slowing down is probably the best thing you can do.

    What size KO2s?
