I have noticed most off topics worthy of discussion(non tacoma advice) breached on TW are usually derailed by personal attacks and defensiveness. As we have all seen, this brings about locked threads and member bans. I suspect this is pretty common on public internet forums. The lowest common denomintor tends to rule in these areas...

Maybe with all the recent advances in social media and its portability the way we communicate has taken a few steps back. It seems everything has to be expedited in society, and as a result the way we transfer information to eachother, in person and especially over the phone and internet, has suffered tremendously. As an example, very few people still communicate by sending mail, even something as simple as a thank you card, birthday card, hell even invitations. That has to be well thought out, and it takes time to do any of those when now a simple abbreviated text or post on someone's wall is more than enough.

Anyway, my thought is this mindset of speedy, impersonal communication has influenced our every day to day life. In a lot of ways for the better, but equally for the worse.

At first I had high hopes for the new media, people seemed to be getting back to sending emails and having BBS discussions with complete thoughts, the older generation that remembered sending letters, cards, and thank you notes to relatives started this way. But now with the single lines of facebook and twitter instant, anonymous, idiocy, we only seem to regurgitate what others feed us without any forethought or fact checking. The political machines know this and have people working full time adding half truths to Wikipedia and sending out internet emails and tv shows filled with lies, which get passed around as truth. Most people cant think for themselves anymore and aren't worth a discussion. They fall into name calling and insults because they have forgotten what having an open mind means.

    correct

this forum is rare that it has no political pages. so politics tends to bleed into the off topic now and then.

seems the mods let it go until it gets ugly, then lock it.

internet forums could maybe do themselves a favor and not have off topic pages at all. it tends to divide folks who otherwise have a common interest (in this case Tacoma trucks)

want to discuss something other than Tacoma trucks? join a political forum or start an off topic forum of your own.

disclaimer: I too have participated in off topic discussions, but would be fine w/o them.
