THIS is the problem. The attitude is wrong. Many people seem so flipping evangelical about what they believe and forcing it down someone else's throat. That is not discussion. That's not listening. That's evangelism.

Try another approach. try listening to the other guy. Try seeing things from his point of view. Be open to the idea that you may not be right (OMG). Try having an open mind. Discussion is a two-way street.

Maybe people should all be open to changing their own position.

That's how I roll. On a roller. Thing.

The other thing is the anonymity of forums. Most members will never meet face to face, and I bet if they did, they'd behave differently. Perhaps even better.

I was thinking the same of drivers. So many rude, stupid, dangerous drivers. It's easy to drive like a dick when it's just another anonymous metal box "in your way." But I bet it would be different if you were all walking down the street, face to face, seeing each other's eyes and expressions.

That's how I prefer my real discussions. Face to face across a table without distractions and preferably with a beer.

my generation abhors face to face contact.

its amazing to see the difference in how people act online and in person; their facebook personas are literally different people

Social networks, that is what ruined discussion. Everyone sits behind a computer like we do every day on TW. Along with that everyone wants to abbreviate everything, and it is ruining written language. It's okay for a kid to occasionally use it, but when they try to turn in papers that actually uses that language it is horrifying.
Kids today have "relationships" and facebook, IM or text eachother, even when they live down the street. Those same kids go with their friends to hang out and are on their cellphones texting other friends that aren't there, not even talking. I remember only 10 years ago, when I was 11 I would walk down the street to talk to the girl I liked, and when it was too late we would talk on the phone if our parents allowed it. Kids are getting lazier at an earlier age.
Even in corporate America, i'm sure everyone just shoots a text to each other now, which takes less work than an e-mail 10 years ago, and actually going to the other persons office about 15 years ago. People take forever "discussing" things they want to do on text, instead of spending ten minutes in person, and by the time they agree on something, the deadline has passed.

It is pretty good. That scene where he gives the speech to his coworker is probably the best part. The beginning is a little rough for those without a dark sense of humor but I think you'll be ok.

I think it's interesting how interwoven those "online" personas are into our generations actual human interaction. I've noticed more than once friends and strangers alike referencing memes and other online stuff... It's really, really sad.

Side note, but related to face to face interactions...

My college is big, so meeting new people and making new contacts happens regularly. Exchanging numbers used to be the norm, but now "what's your Facebook blahty blah?" Big social websites are such a huge crutch in our society, especially in my generation. Like previously said without these facades people can put up (and let's admit paint a picture of themselves people will be impressed by) they can't talk to people.

I'll just leave this here. Movie is totally worth a watch and is on Netflix instant. It's a dark comedy with one of the best "messages" I've seen in a movie in a looooong time. Worth it!

I will edit and note that I see Tinkerbell already beat me to the punch on this. BUT, great minds apparently think alike.

.... it's just too bad most won't 'get' the message and will just see it as a f*cked up, funny movie.

I know it man. The wrap he has with his coworker in the cubical is a trip! Love it and couldn't be more true. I think there's a lot of people in this particular thread that would dig it. Especially Oz and Scocar.
