1st and 2nd generations all look great! I see the point you're trying to make by saying that the 1st generations hold a high value. When I was buying my '04 double cab PreRunner the Toyota dealer wanted $18k!!! and it has 90k!!! Then I turned around and saw an '08 double cab PreRunner that was certified pre-owned that came with all kinds of warranties and only had 30k miles, dealer wanted $22k for it. I was seriously confused... Nonetheless I would've gone for the second generation but it was a little much for my wallet. I see 1st generations go for way more than their book value but I think that's because some people feel more of an attachment to the 3.4's and know they're extremely dependable and bulletproof. Not bashing 2nd generations cause I would drive one in a heartbeat!

I honestly like the 4.0 better, no retarded timing belt and way more power.

    Intake, exhaust, lift. Typical stuff.
3.4 & Auto Tranny has no balls imo. Great engine though compared to its competition .

I'm not saying they're bad motors, I'm saying that I've heard from some people that they prefer the 3.4 over the 4.0. Like I said earlier, I'd take a 2nd gen any day! I do love my 3.4 though :D

    What ARE you talking about?

    - stronger frame that doesnt rust through,
    - composite bed that doesnt rust or dent,
    - 2TR-FE, better in every way than all other engines,
    - front spindle redesign so the lower ball joint doesnt rip apart when slightly worn (in other words, the wheels dont spontaneously fall off),

And FYI all.... T100 --> 1st gen Tundra --> 2nd gen Tacoma. Same truck with adjustments/updates, 3 different names.

    Quality > quantity.
Also, what are we comparing to what when you point at hp?
If you are comparing to first gen engines, 2TR-FE is 164 hp, 183 footpounds.

Current label says 159, but that is a result of different correction factors. In 2005, it was actually listed as 164.

Torque on 2TR-FE is only 30-ish pounds lower than 5VZ-FE, but be aware that these are only *peak* torque values. Go a little off peak and you may see a surprising inversion.

Both are Stock - built correct from the start.
We have one of each. A 99 reg cab 4x4 and a 09 crew TRD Sport. Both are great in there own way. The 1st gens were built overseas whereas the 2nd gen here in the states. Americans like things bigger so the Tacoma grew. The 2nd gen seats are even wider for larger Americans. Our 2nd gen is great on the road, comfortable and rides great. Our 1st gen can go places, and has, where other trucks only dream about. Enjoy what you got!

    Well said Aquatic Tacoma,

Different applications and one heavily influenced by the american market. I love my first gen, but I don't have a big family and a monster trailer to haul. I've got the girlfriend, myself, a dog, a canoe, haul a small trailer with a small sled in the winter and haul a 14ft deep and wide with a 40hp outboard. No need for a big truck with a 4.0L and no need for the cost of the gas it consumes. If things were different, I would likely need the 4.0L and more room.

But if I had a second gen I would then need to buy a quad to get me where my truck can go...:D

I moded 1999 Taco so much it had turned to Land Cruiser
Owned 1 gen and now have 2gen. ALso own two more Toyota trucks.
Overall 1gen vs 2 gen is preference purely. Yeah smaller truck is better for trail but when you need something that
    1. Can go on trail
    2. Haul bunch of building materials from Home Depot every weekend
    3. Be a daily driver
    4. Carry kids
    5. Serve as the camper.
2gen truck can hold its own.
Just towing capacity of 6500 lb is a major plus. Especially having 6500 lb with out buying fullsize truck weighting 6000lb

My 2gen had been in super soft sand with my wife as the driver, and performed extremely well, much better then fullsize trucks. squat look is for lower center of gravity and that feels pretty good especially o n the hills.
V6 2gen has is top notch engine. that had been installed in Land Cruisers for very long time. Its been proven to last, same with transmission.
Now if I had no kids and only wanted truck for fun I would love to have 1gen. But with family, house work. 2Gen is best you can get for the money. Fullsize would have been too big, too cumbersome to deal with. 2gen is right size. Not too big and not too small.

I liked my 1st gen truck when I drove it off the lot years ago and I still like it now just as much. The 2nd gens have more room and are updated, temping...but I still like my '97.

What's he talking about my 1st Gen was manufactured in Fremont California, That was the plant where the Tacoma's were manufactured back then. The plant closed back in 2009

Decision to Close Plant Casts Toyota in Unfamiliar Role:
