Meh, people don't want cars with no options. They're making vehicles with stuff that people want. They offer all no frills cars, people will move to another manufacturer that gives them what they want. Besides, you can still get a 306hp Camaro with 18" wheels a manual and no sunroof for 23k. SS starts at 32k with no options. Not like the sunroof and all that stuff is standard. For what it's worth, you can't even get navigation in a Camaro, which IMO any vehicle that doesn't offer navigation at least as an option at that price point is a joke. But I hate the new Camaro's anyway so I could care less. They wouldn't be making money if they were selling a 426hp car for 21k. Hell that probably wouldn't have bought a V8 Camaro near the end of the f-body Camaro days. As with most cars, don't want all that shit, don't check the option boxes. A lot of luxury branded cars don't even come with some of the stuff you're complaining about standard. Stuff like USB/ipod control shouldn be standard. Single disc CD? You're in the minority for wanting that to be your audio option. I understand your point, but times have changed. This isn't the 60s where people were going down and ordering stripper models with just a huge motor and not it. Sure, there's still a small segment that would like that, but that's a terrible business model to mirror your lineup around the wants of a small group of people.

Well, the first part of your post is pure opinion, plain and simple.

The second part is pretty much flat out wrong...
    - After 2004, they did not become full size trucks, they went from being small / light trucks, to mid-size trucks.

    - The 1st gens are not more expensive because of a lack of interest in the 2nd gen, they hold their value as they always have, because they are quality trucks.

    - There is not a lack of interest in the 2nd gen Tacomas, and many people really like the new body style. This is proven by the fact that in many parts of the country / big cities (etc.), you can't drive more than a few minutes wihout seeing a 2nd gen Tacoma... They may not be as prevalant as Fords / Chevy's / Rams, but there are a ton on the road! Hell, I looked in my work parking lot just now (I work nights), and there are more 2nd gen Tacos in the parking lot than any other single model of vehicle.

    This...

I would be happy if not everything came in options "packages", and singular add ons weren't ridiculously priced at times. I love my auto dimming mirror, but I should be able to just select that as an option, not have to select an entire package. I don't mind the stock stereo in my 2012 (it is far superior to my old 2008 Taco stereo), but if I wanted the upgrade, I shouldn't have to select the $4,000 (price is totally made up) "package". Hell, floor mats are like $150, with the all weather ones being even more... that is retarded!

I hear you. I'm just not sure people "want" most of that stuff. They are just forced to buy it, if they buy new. My buddy was trying to buy a stripped Silverado (4x4, A/C, rubber interior, no chrome, etc) and it was $38k. The non-stripped was $40k.

I may be completely biased because the circle of guys I run in absolutely detest "new" cars because of their yuppiness. I'm not just saying that all want to go get a Superbird with seatbelt-delete, etc. I tend to see that most guys are wanting a dependable and capable vehicle without the plush. Hell, I may be in the minority...but you know what they say about majorities...that may mean all of the stupid people are one side :D

Of course, car companies want to sell more expensive cars because their profit margin increases with each gadget they can tack on. They can also sell more parts down the road when said gadgets fail or get to charge more labor because the cars are more complicated, ie more problems.

A perfect example of how Toyota is moving in the "wrong" (apply my bias here ;)) direction is looking at the Tundra. Look at the 1st gen as compared to the 2nd. Holy Testicular Tuesday Batman! What a world of difference. They went ginormous and the SOB still doesn't have a diesel. How retarded.

Anyway, I'll agree to disagree with the folks that believe car companies are pandering to what people really want. I would venture to guess that most market studies are done by wet-behind-the-ears college grads who want to see their iPod interface with their tire pressure system and windshield washer squirters. The company sells more junk, makes more money, and the consumer is satisfied with a car that looks pretty in the driveway of their McMansion.

    I'm an old-school 30 year old.

I agree. My wife and I owned two Toyota pickups, the last of which, a '94 we ran into the ground and donated the carcass. Went without for 7 years and finally decided to take the plunge again and the only one we liked was a '04 Tacoma. 2005 and up looked too bulky and oversized. I think the 2001-2004 are perfectly styled for light duty pickups.

I am finding the 1st genners to be really full of fud. What is this about quality? You mean to tell me that having frames rot through is high quality? You mean to tell me that the lower balljoints getting ripped out of their cups resulting in the wheels falling off is high quality? What is this "plastic" nonsense? There is no more "plastic" on a 2nd gen than a 1st!!! In fact, there is just as much plastic on a pre-tacoma even.

Next up: the size. Sure the 2nd gen *looks* bigger, but have any of you actually looked up the dimensions? It is a couple of inches here and a couple of inches there!!! The part that really makes the 2ng gen look big is the height of the bed sides. 2nd gen has a deeper bed, that means more cargo space, and THAT part doesnt increase any actual size of the truck.

I have also seen reference to wanting a bare bones kind of vehicle... well that is exactly how I see 2nd gen Tacoma. What I have is a frame with a 4-cyl engine, a manual transmission, a cab, and a bed. Whats in the cab? a couple of seats with mechanical adjustment handles, 3 pedals, a shift stick, and a steering wheel. WTF? The only thing this came with that my base model bare bones '88 didnt have, is an air conditioner!
