    Good for you...
To what "engine cover" do you refer? As hard as I try, I dont see any engine cover under the hood of my 2ng gen, all I see is an engine. And all images I see of 1st gens show just as much plastic in there.

The V6 has a massive plastic cover over the engine.

Mine is too... It's a composite of iron, carbon, manganese, silicon, and small amounts of several other elements.

I'll take my 2nd gen over my last two trucks (2000-2003) all day long. I don't see many 1st gen's on the road around here anymore, maybe the rust got em'. I think they were good until the frames rotted out of them.

    Not plastic.
The actual specifications are super secret, but it is fiberous, possibly glass or cabon, extremely dense and rigid. I havent heard of any spontaneous failures, just from extreme circumstances, like wrecks.

It is basically a rust proof space age material, and you wouldnt believe how much abuse they can take.

If in 5000 years, somebody comes back to the final resting place of a 2nd, that bed will still be there, intact.

Im not trying to argue that a 1st gen Tacoma isnt a great truck, because it IS a great truck, but technology moves on.

The first genners will always call it plastic regardless just as something to give the 2nd gens shit about ;) I personally like the idea of that bed just cause I'm assuming it doesn't dent as easily, if at all. I would be kinda concerned about it just breaking though if it was stressed too much by a load or whatever rather than gradually bending like steel would.

Ok, here is my take on what toyota should have done:

They should have kept the tacoma the size and basic style as the 1st gens

Then they should have resurected the t-100 as their mid size, they were a solid vehicle that, with some work, could have been awesome. Make this the same as the 2nd gens.

And then have the tundra for the full size.

The whole 1st gen vs 2nd gen argument is moot. There is nothing even remotely similar between the two aside from the model name. This only re-enforces my opinion of what toyota SHOULD have done.

My 1st gen has over 200k miles and still kick'n, i hope the 2nd gens can one day have as many high mileage trucks on the road as there are 1st gens today.

    Intake, exhaust, lift. Typical stuff.
T-100 was killed by Ford in a copy write case (F-150 and T-100 were too similar apparently).

Not really... the T100 was going to be called the T150... then Ford threatened to sue. The name was changed to the T100. It was around from '93 to '98. It died for lot's of reasons... lawsuits by Ford wasn't one of them.

I sort of agree with that... but with a year in-between the two, I can't say that the T100 became the Tundra; more like the T100 was replaced by the Tundra. And after looking into a few things, I was wrong earlier during the Ford F-150 / T100 issue. I seems that the Tundra was going to be called the T150, and this is when Ford stepped in, and the name became Tundra.

Ya, the Tundra was originally slated to be called the T-150, and Ford's lawsuit (or threat) killed it.
The F150 and Tundra similarities started a LOT of rumors about both collaboration between Ford and Toyota and/or lawsuits, but the development was pretty much parallel. There was not enough time between the public revelation of the various concept vehicles and production vehicles for there to have been any redesign by either company.

But the Tundra (1st Gen) always had more in common with the T-100 than any other vehicle. The Tundra was slightly smaller than the F150 (I bought an F150 bedmat for mine and trimmed about 4" from the width)... The Tundra was about the same size as the T100, it just sat a bit higher and had a slightly more aggressive stance and front end treatment.

    Pretty much.

It was a big risk on Toyota's part considering the fairly poor sales of the T100 compared to the last of the old style and early Tacoma.

People that I worked with who LOVED Toyota vehicles, but needed a full sized pickup, referred to the T100 as "toy trucks"

Tundra was a big risk and the redesign (1999) paid off.
