I definitely did not have more weight than the payload... It was heavy, but not that heavy.

Basically you take the truck in, the advisor writes up the repair order stating your concern. The tech takes the RO and starts the diag process on the truck per Toyota's shop manual. Then, based on what he finds he then tells Toyota what the problem is and they start the repair process (rebuild the trans/replace the trans etc...). The whole time this is going on the tech is "punched in" to the ticket running time on it to prove that he is working on your vehicle so Toyota can pay the dealership their warranty rate to the tech while the repair is being performed. All parts and labor would be on a warranty line and show zero cost to you.

The dealership will be reimbursed by Toyota for the techs time and the parts used for the repair. Essentially, instead of you paying the bill to the dealership, Toyota is stroking the check.

    Hopefully that makes sense!

Yep, that is exactly what I was wondering. I was just curious to see if the dealership has a big incentive not to go through with the warranty (because of offloading or payload), but they don't really loose anything other than time.

There is definitely an issue with the trans. I let it sit for like a day, and when I took it out the next time it just seems to have issues changing gears at the right time. The engine goes up to like 3.5k rpms before it changes from 1st to 2nd gear, unless I accelerate REALLY slowly.

I am also worried about either getting a rebuilt trans. From Scotty Kilmer's youtube page, it seems like rebuilt ones don't work as well or last as long... It would always be an option to get it fixed, trade it in for a manual tacoma... Not sure

Depending on the number of miles driven with the transmission acting this way, I would be very concerned about the possibility of premature wear/damage to the transmission/converter clutches if it really was slipping due to low fluid. Take it to Toyota first, see what they say, but if they blow it off and just top off your fluid, I'd take it to a reputable third party mechanic for a second opinion. Specifically express your concern about the clutches, and possible damage/premature wear. Get it all documented.

    @steiner9er

So what's the deal? Lots of banter and speculation deserves you giving us an update on the final results.............

    Couple other items to consider.

You being in warranty, don't you have free Toyota towing? Or AAA? I sure would use that rather than driving it in. (post #9)

And if they keep the vehicle, which is likely, they should provide you a loaner for transportation until they are done.

The tech doing the warranty work gets paid by the flat rate book just like he does for a non warranty job. It's the dealership that doesn't get the full markup on the warranty statement. But it's still good business for them.

Thanks for checking in. Being a student, I haven't taken it in yet. I am able to limp around as long as I don't push the gas hard, so I will just drive it down there.

They cancelled my appointment because they need me to come in on a weekday, but I have classes on weekdays so it is going to be tough. Im going to try to get it figured out this week with the appointments.

    This guy gets it.
Don't get rail roaded because you're doing this, that, and the other. I'm sure it is in limp mode to avoid damage to the vehicle. However, only a matter of time before you need that power and acceleration to do something. Also who knows maybe they claim the ole " you shouldn't have driven around like this you broke something"

    Agreed, get it towed.
Your driving it around, knowing there's an issue, is a recipe for the the dealer/Toyotato possiblly to blame a large repair on you. If the initial failure was just a sensor, or something small, but you limped it around causing further damage, you can be on the hook.

And hes extremely annoying to listen to.

I’m assuming the “wind noise” is a whine noise - like a worn out or empty power steering pump? In that case, either your filter is clogged, you’re low on fluid or your pump seal is bad. Every single one of those is bad and the more you drive it, the more damage you’re doing to the clutch bands.

Best you don’t keep driving it

Was the transmission shifting continuously through the mountains? (Termed “hunting”) every shift adds heat to a transmission. If the transmission is ever hunting, especially uphill with a load, you need to manually shift to the lower gear it can’t decide on. This prevents the continual shifting.

My guess is it overheated and blew out some fluid. Any leaks under the car?

And, does this car not have trans temp warnings? I know there’s no gauge, but most vehicles these days will pop up a warning on the dash
