The release of Static Electricity is a very high probability at the pumps at a gas station and doesn't take much to ignite fuel vapors !!!!

True, still what is the ignition source?

Spark plugs are at top of motor, fuel vapors pool at the ground .

    There is no risk.

Getting in and out of your vehicle is enough to create a static charge . This is why it's recommended to touch a metal part of your vehicle to release this charge prior to fueling

I've seen and witnessed a fuel flash fire from this !!!

Just last week I saw a lady behind me do this ( getting in and out of her car during fueling) and I yelled at her not to be so F'n stupid

static electricity is like a match......it has electrical charges that are the ignition source.....spark plugs get electrical charge from the ignition coil......if one of those coil wires is cracked or has exposed wire it could short out which combined with gas fumes will ignite......so you hypothesis is all wrong. vapors tend to rise upward

Back in the day of carbureted engines, chances of throwing sparks from a backfire were much higher than they are now.

Nowadays, as others have said, it's static buildup. A vehicle with a loose ground wire (could be age, could be from a bad subwoofer install) has a higher chance of static discharge when the engine is running. Think balloon on head, but with motor mounts on frame. Add that to gas fumes on a dry day, and whumph...

Another stupid thing I see at gas stations is people filling up those ABS plastic 5 gal fuel containers in the bed of a p/up . They're supposed to take them out of the p/up bed and place them on the ground prior to refueling

You either die or survive long enough to harness the power of the engine and the gas pump simultaneously effectively becoming an all-powerful immortal diety

The government says this is only recommended when you have a plastic or carpeted bed liner. :notsure:

Now I can't confirm this, but I did read that in California it has been known to cause cancer.

Yes with bed liners or carpet and have seen them ignite and subsequent flash fire from static Electricity while refueling in the bed of a p/up

Not the best idea, but I do it occasionally. Allegedly the fumes can get sucked into the intake causing a backfire (not afterfire). No biggie with a diesel, probably not the best idea with gasoline.
