If you drove it until it stalled... you’re probably gonna need a new engine. I’d think new or machined heads at a minimum, but if it stalled I’d say there is also cylinder damage.

She ran it until it stalled. I’m nervous for her, but hoping for the best.

If it still turns over when she cranks it that’s a good sign.

Usually when wildly over heated I check compression quick and see if its obvious what happened.

Next we quote a tear down or used motor.

I would 100% expect a head warped beyond spec, and a block that might be close.

What I've seen is cylinder so badly warped it allows compression to pass from cylinder to cylinder. Coolant everywhere

Sorry too say,but you should of had it towed, running the engine until it stops with no coolant,is almost always a destroyed engine .

    OP I wish you luck.

At this point you need a good mechanic to evaluate the engine. It doesn't look good from your description.

Sorry to hear about your Brother. I am sure he is proud of you.

If you post this into the local forum for your area I'm sure there are many good samaritans that would be glad to help you evaluate the issue.

Well guys my truck is at a shop just to be evaluated. I was told I need a new motor, question is ,can't it be rebuilt? If not, im in the market for a motor 2.7 4 cyl, and a trustworthy mechanic to put it in for me, i was quoted 12000, i thought, hell no! So i can get an engine for about 2500 and labor ,so around 4 to 5 grand. But i dont have that kind of money to spend on it, but i need a car, any suggestions or anyone with some advice, I don't want to get taken advantage of because I'm a girl, and you just never know.

Sorry to hear that OP, but don't lose heart. :muscleflexing:

In my view, the cost to replace the engine will also be decent down payment on a new vehicle. If your truck is worthwhile to you - I know it was your brother's - then it's worthwhile to fix. Even with a replacement engine, it'll be bulletproof for years. It's highly unlikely you'd experience another failure like that again. Shop around like crazy and check all your Better Business Bureau ratings to find a place that will give you the best deal they can on an engine replacement. Look at and get involved on local forums, read up on the general basics of what it takes to replace an engine, talk to your local dealer and see if a service adviser or technician can recommend a good local shop. Knowledge is power - no one will mess with you when you know what you're talking about. It'll take legwork, but with perseverance it can be done.

But also consider that buying a new vehicle has the advantage of new components and a warranty, so no more surprise failures. With everything going on right now in the world, you can score a good deal on a new car - even a new Toyota truck, if you like.

Tacomaworld is a great resource too, to cross check to make sure the info you're getting jives with everyone else's experience.

Not sure if I consider the mechanic trustworthy if you was quoted $12k. I wonder what the quote is if it was for a male TW member. Buy a cheap beater car to get around and park the truck until you can find a good used low mileage replacement and a knowledgeable but honest mechanic to install it. Always get multiple quotes from different shops to get an general idea on the costs of the install and warranty.

What he said^^^ There have to be some people around you locally, that could help. With a little reimbursement and some food of course. It shouldn't be hard to swap in a 2TR.

If you were in Houston, I'd offer my assistance. So if I would help out, I am sure others will. Should be an easy weekend job.

Start looking on Ebay for a 2.7 engine from a auto salvage yard, and see what it would cost to have it shipped to you (or a shop of your choosing). You can go for a 4.0L, but the cost to upgrade would be significantly higher, so I recommend sticking with a 2.7. Everything else (intake, exhaust, etc.) will bolt up to the new engine.

I would be EXTREMELY hesitant to pay a shop $12K for a rebuild. A friend of mine had a 4-Runner that needed it's engine rebuilt, and thought the shop knew what they were doing since they worked on Toyotas. He paid an outrageous amount to rebuild engine, and it had issues from the day he picked up his truck. If the mechanic isn't a friend of the family, go somewhere else. I think you'll be in much better shape by installing a low-mileage "used" engine that has never been "rebuilt."

It would be nice if there were some TN people who would come by to help with the engine swap. (hint hint) But if you need a shop to do the swap, it shouldn't be too expensive to pull the old one and install the new one. You may need to install a few things like engine mounts (if they're worn beyond limits), but otherwise it shouldn't be that expensive. Definitely a whole lot less than $12K. That's bordering on criminal.

If you want a "zero" mileage engine, I would go with something like a Jasper rebuild with a warranty, but you can get it done cheaper by buying a low mileage salvage engine. Wouldn't think a 2.7 would be that expensive.

That really sucks OP - the gauge went to zero because there was no coolant touching the thermostat. Good heads up for other people - if your engine temp gauge suddenly drops or rises pull over.

Have a guy friend try to get a quote and see how much it is. I know for me, I’m always the one getting repairs done for my sister and mom because of exactly this.
