Whoa... relax guys... there are lots of nice ways to build nice things...

I happen to believe bigger tires have advantages, expecially when combined with articulation, and low center of gravity - its physics; I also agree a locker is a great idea - I said so in another thread. The best thing would be to get it all done at one time, or buy one of those awesome turn key rigs or custom builds.

But I can only afford so much, and I am simply choosing to improve the suspension, mounting points, and frame first. I've got 70,000 miles on the truck and I want to replace what's worn out, or inadequate first = shocks, springs, joints, some reinforcing, and rustproofing.

The armor, winch, compressor, and safety gear are essential, regardless of how its set up. I need the UCA's for every kind of driving I want to do.

New tires and the locker are on the list, just not this go round. Wish I could build to the max now, but can't. Not going to risk my life on the most hardcore wheeling, until I can afford to replace "all" the obvious weak links and add a nice roll cage. Just turns out thats about $7,500 beyond my budget.

The Golden Spike and Rubicon trails will be there for years to come, and eventually I'll get over them... just not for a couple of years.

Its all good... have fun and don't stress the little stuff... cheers... Don

How about both. I have a 90 jeep wrangler with leaf springs on all 4 corners sitting on 35s...... does that count. I think flex is more important cause u have to have enough down travel for the wheels to make contact but small enough tires to not hit the fenders. You must not wheel hard cause down here in alabama its easy to bind up a suspension and yea you can still bottom out with 35s and alot of travel

    agree...
... articulation, tires, and CG all have to work together.

If my goal was strictly wheeling the tough stuff I would do it a bit different.

But this first build is for:
1 - hauling a pretty heavy load (pop-top camper, human +2 dogs, and gear @ 1600 to 1800 lbs) (also a bit high on the CG)
2 - reasonable comfort for driving thousands of miles of asphault (to get where I want to go)
3 - then be able to "safely" get to most of the off road attractions - by "myself". I will be strictly solo with 2 dogs for company. The big stuff isn't really a reasonable option without support.
4 - easy to find parts and make repairs (in case I break in some, god-knows-where, back water town), between expeditions
5 - still be able to enjoy a decent amout of the slickrock and desert off-roading in Utah (without the camper)
6 - oh yeah and be my daily driver - its my only 4 wheel vehicle - but not working, so daily driving don't count for much

Once I get my long distance exploring done - then I'll soften up the suspension and modify for the more difficult obstacles. Really isn't a single set up that rocks on the slickrock and Rubicon AND lets me do the heavy load, cross country stuff comfortably.

Just have to do it one thing at a time, and I want to do the long distance stuff first.

Its good to hear ideas from different people... now its just putting it all together in a package that suits my needs... H

p.s... tranny cooler here, winch here tomorrow, Deaver custom springs ordered, Fox components being looked into at DSM, All-Pro UCA's and armor being ordered, investigating CBI sliders (like the U-channel bolt on design)... :D... this just might be a plan...

Appreciate everyone's help... here and in other threads.

Decisions are made, and money is being spent.

All that's left is to put it together and see what happens...

    later..... H

I think it was/is obvious to everyone who was being the dick. There are guys that have been here for YEARS that don't talk to people the way you did. Let alone people that have been a member since April.

Good of you to apologize but it doesn't mean much when you try and blame others in the process.
