There exists an amazing thing about the internet specifically common to mail lists and forums: Exclusionary memory and clique-ish herding.

"Use the search" members exclaim to the "new guy"--As if a discussion had 8 months ago about something different absolutely pertains to the question that hasn't yet fully formed. Without consciously realizing it those members have the benefit of not only reading that thread but also 5 other threads that were somewhat similar if only peripherally. That's part of the fundamental framework of cognitive architecture, or how you learn---applying two things you do know to a third thing you do not know. A new member won't have the benefit of that architecture. Not because they're stupid, but just because they don't have that experience.

It would do some of you good to remember that just because a new guy doesn't know why spacers and/or blocks are a bad idea that doesn't mean he's an idiot (which, after looking it up is what you mean by "derp", I think. I'm in my 40's and no longer care if I know all the cool terms.....)

Regardless: Most of you are helpful and that's good.
Let's just remember that new members are going to ask "stupid" questions, which in fact are not stupid---they're just not as well educated on the common theme or subject.

Now. The flip side of that is that most kids can't write. Or speak, for that matter, further complicated in that most people write as they speak. To those of you that are new and can't effectively communicate via our chosen method and/or do so poorly (meaning: hay so dude get this i was like drivin down on the 903 and my trucks broke and i dunno i mean, i was like drivin and like it went bang and stopped. can u help) then yes, you likely shroud be treated like an idiot.
Effectively communicating with your intended audience is the cornerstone of learning and you need to use the communication tools available. In our case, that's written language.

    Rant over.

this whole thread is uncalled for, yes there is a lot of things on here that dont have anything to do with a tacoma but to me before i got on here seemed like a community of guys and girls that loved the same truck and there seemed to be some interaction beyond that "i.e." show me you dog" but yes for the new guys, which im one dont rag on them for not knowing what you know or knowing how the site works. for me i look up to the guys that can tell me things that i dont know about my tacoma. but maybe this should have been a "vent" thred

I will admit it right now: I'm an idiot about my truck. I ask stupid questions because I've never had any experience with things like lifts, or even basic maintenance. I probably use terms wrong because I don't know better. I always took it to a shop and paid someone else to take care of it. But one day (before I got my truck) I was dirt poor and needed new spark plugs. So I went on YouTube and learned how to change them, then bought plugs and a little gap gauge thingy, and did it myself. A couple months later I needed brake shoes and a friend helped me change them. And I kinda liked it, it was fun.

So yeah, I've seen some people get torn down a bit because they ask a question that they might have found the answers to on search. Or asked something someone thought they *should* have known. But I've also seen a lot more helpful people who like helping the new folks learn about their trucks and like giving out advice. It helps to put your focus on the helpful threads and ignore the people who aren't being friendly or helpful. ;)

Good luck out there, TW is a dangerous place, right? :D
