Hey guys, since yall are talking about improving the your transmissions, I'll ask a few questions about what to do to mine and how much I may be out to do it.

I saw somebody talking about swapping fluids to Royal purple and doing it a few times already, so how often do I need to change any fluids?

Also, my throw out bearing is chirping and has been for about 15k miles. I have been thinking of getting it replaced, but dont know how much it would cost to have it done. From reading here, it seems like this is something that is fairly common with my truck. The last bit it has seemed like I can also hear a kind of whirring sound regardless of the clutch being pressed or not. I may be imagining that, but if I am not, what could this be.

Also, I am pushing 90k miles and am starting to think the clutch is slowly on it's way out, is there a good option for a better clutch and what would it cost roughly to have a new one installed?

Is there anything else I need to know to get the most out of it if I have to do the clutch or throw out bearing, besides replacing the transmission. I dont want to put out a bunch of money just for the hell of it, but if I have to do this stuff, I'd just as soon upgrade for just a bit more than leave it stock, if the labor is already going to HAVE to be done.

I would talk to Gadget at URD. He is a vendor here. He can advise you on the best clutch choice for your driving style. He also sells a repair sleeve for the TOB that is popular.

Upgraded to a Stage III from competition clutch, and the URD Throwout bearing. Noticed lower RPM's at highway speeds.

New clutch, URD throw out bearing replacement, Redline MT-90. Now she runs smooth. If I could only get rid of the shifter wiggle......Thats where Coupe comes in. <----- I found your shifter mod on the XR forum. Hopefully sometime soon when I get a chance I will atempt it.

They sale for $120 shipped + your old shifter. This includes shipping & a new white tip bushing.

    I have several made up.

I also have TRD SS with this mod.

And if money is no object, I also have a B&M with this mod.

I forgot to put it in my first post but I already have a URD SS installed. I just really want to get rid of the wiggle, but I have very little time these days, working 6-12's, 2 kids and a wife, leaves no time for truck mods.

The $120 model, in either an 8 1/2" or 9 1/2" version works well with the URD SS. I ship it with new set screws for the URD extension.

This is very tempting.....indeed. I want to do the work for the experience and "fun" of it, but having no time to do it is leaning me towards buying one from you. What a pickle i'm in. When I decide what to do i'll PM you. Glad to see you are on TW so now I know I can get in touch with you.

I have been on TW for a while. I just don't have as many posts. I have sold a few shifters over here. I probably need to do a post about them. I will tell you, by the time you get everything you need to do the mod, you will spend $120. So for the money, it's a pretty good deal.

Here is a pic of several modded shifters.
    stuff023_e45d5dc4286186f4d32d62dfa36a2783836b52b0.jpg

    Going from left to right.

There are two (2) OEM shifters cut down to approximately 8 1/2"

The next one is an OEM shifter cut down to 9 1/2"

The fourth & fifth ones are TRD SS cut down to 9 1/2".

and the last one on the right is a B&M cut down to 9 1/2".

    Stock length is 11 1/2".

That was my next move, getting a materials list together to see how much it was going to be. This might be my next "gift to myself" for the truck. Would I need to send you mine first or will you ship yours first? This is my daily driver. Where are you located? Do you put a return shipping label in/on the box?

The way I sell these shifters is:

You send me $120 via paypal.

I ship you out a shifter, with a new tip bushing & set screws for your URD SS. I do this through USPS Priority Mail. You will usually see the shifter in 3 days.

You swap it out and send me back the old shifter. No down time.

sounds good. How much of PITA is it to get the set screws out of the one I have now. I peened them over like the instructions said to also had thread loc put in it. Does that mess up the new screws when they are put in? Is there something I need to do to correct it?

I usually put a torch on them. I have a small propane torch. I will get them hot, then gradually loosen the loc-tite. Also make sure you have a good fitting allen wrench.

When I peen the screws, I do not get over zealous. I use a chisel and make two marks at 180 degrees apart.

I used red thread loc, and only peened them once on each screw I think.

BTW: You did a great write up on your mod, I'll leave this here in case anyone else wants to check it out:

Save me one of those 9 1/2" OEM shifters, I'm thinking I'll buy one already done, just need to run it by the boss.

No problem. I have a boss, too.

On the thread that you have listed, I have made some subtle improvements. I need to update that. I may do that this week end.

<----What year is that Hot Rod in you picture? My father has a '31 Model A rodded out. Small block chevy, shaved door handels, chopped roof, custom upolstry, yada yada yada. He did everything himself besides paint, and most of the body work. Love to see Hot Rods rolling around since I grew up with a motor head dad who always took me to car shows. My favorite one to go to was York, PA. Huge show with cars from all over the country. You could spend two days there and not see everything.

Interesting! Thanks for the info. I'm sure that can swap out a stock manual for a T-56. But I wonder if they can swap an automatic for a T-56?
