What Have You Done To Your 3rd Gen Today?

Put my compressor in on a slee mount. Just waiting for some 90 degree elbows to be delivered to finish putting it together.


Also installed a $35 support bracket to put my rear bumper cap back on since I knocked it off on a trail the other week. Anyone know if it's possible to re-calibrate BSM without paying the dealership $$$$?

 

Well despite getting rear ended week before last I was still able to take the truck on a little beach trip. We had a blast exploring Cape Lookout!

They are not plug and play on the JBL systems. You will either need an adapter or splice the wires to hook them up. The plugs are not the same as the factory speakers.

Picked up a 6ft bed mat and OEM metal divider today on marketplace and it was my answer to a secure way to hold my 1950 steel gerry cans.

Had to trim the bed mat, but I was also trimming the front mudflaps so why not?

I should have thought to look up the tweeters for JBL systems on Crutchfield's site. D'oh! Here are the ones they list, (although the don't carry the DS18 brand at all):

They do list bass blockers for some. I've used those in several installs and they did make a difference. Worth a few dollars and IIRC there's enough room to squeeze them into the dash area.

The DS18s come with a plug with bare wires that can be spliced in. I didn't look at all of the recommended tweeters listed on Crutchfield, but they all appear to have bare wires and none that I looked at had a connection adapter. So if the DS18 aren't PNP, hopefully it's a fairly easy, straightforward connection.

I'd really like to hear what the $1K Focal FRAK tweeters sound like!

Hopefully one of the good folks here will be able to post some photos of the JBL tweeter mounting and wiring setup. TIA!

 

Thank you! The ride is very similar, just a bit firmer. I couldn't believe how similar it was, though, in comparison to the stock offroad suspension. Since this was my first time doing this type of install, I drove the first few miles with Radio and AC off, gritting my teeth anticipating hearing problematic noises, but nothing so far!

Oh boy... do I ever know that feeling. Every little noise or odd thing and you're like "what was that?! Is everything tight?! Did I forget something?! " The sort of good thing about doing most anything the first time is that you're über focused on getting it right. After you've installed [insert almost anything here] multiple times you can get a little careless. Not you or I of course, but just sayin'. Eventually it'll all be in the rearview mirror and you'll be enjoying life to the fullest.

I followed up with BakFlip customer service this morning. They're sending out a replacement cover!

 

Hmmm... says the adapters are for the speakers, but notes "Does not fit in dash corner in your 2020 Toyota Tacoma Pickup DoubleCab with JBL Audio System". Also discontinued, although I'm sure there's a replacement. So maybe it'll just be a simple splice.

I agree, they are much better than stock. But are they any better than the Subaru kickers?

 

Yes IMHO, had both, returned the Kickers once I installed the DS18s. The Kickers were better than OE, but not by much. After reading multiple reviews here and elsewhere I ordered the DS18s and was quite surprised by how much better, a bit louder and clearer they sounded.

 

had about 3.2-3.3 quarts left over to do my rear diff after changing the gear oil in the front diff. Wasn't enough for it to run out the fill hole so had to order another quart. Drove on it with the 3.2 quarts for a few days and everything seemed fine but went ahead and added more oil today until it ran out the fill hole. Took another half quart or so but i overfilled it a bit until it started dripping.

I had already changed the rear diff fluid at 500 miles (28,000 now). both the front and rear diff fluid looked pretty clean this time around. First time changing the front.

 

Nice, Ok. Sounds like a plan. Those are the easiest to replace anyway.

 

I had the same thought when I was putting them up there. Should of at least put a board across, maybe a future improvement.

 

My SR came stock with 245s the door said 32psi for those. I'm running 265/75/16 and I have found for my day to day comfort and MPG that 37-38 up front and 35-36 in the rear is good. That's just me tho.... Seems high just typing it in, but it works out well for me.
